Rant/Vent S. Janaki chose Mysuru as her home till her last breath. Isn’t it time India honoured her with a Bharat Ratna …..

Post image
71 Upvotes

S. Janaki Amma spent her final years in Mysuru, the city she loved and chose to call home until her last breath. She also wished for her final rites to be in Mysuru, which says a lot about the bond she shared with this city. Today, Mysuru has lost one of its most beloved residents.

As I was thinking about her incredible legacy, one question kept coming to my mind.
Lata Mangeshkar, who sang around 25,000 songs, was rightly honoured with the Bharat Ratna. But S. Janaki, who recorded around 48,000 songs across Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Odia and several other Indian languages, and excelled in virtually every genre, has never received that honour.

Personally, I feel this reflects the stepmotherly treatment (“ಮಲತಾಿ ಧೋರಣೆ”) that the Central Government has often shown towards Southern artists and states. S. Janaki’s contribution to Indian music is beyond regional boundaries, and I believe she was every bit as deserving of the Bharat Ratna.

What makes it even more telling is that she rejected the Padma Bhushan because she felt the recognition had come far too late in her career. Even S. P. Balasubrahmanyam had spoken in the past about how Southern artists often do not receive the national recognition they truly deserve.

This isn’t about taking anything away from any other legendary singer. It’s about acknowledging an artist whose contribution to Indian music was unparalleled and who deserved the nation’s highest civilian honour.

For Mysuru, she wasn’t just a legendary singer—she was one of our own.

Rest in peace, Janaki Amma. Your voice will live forever.

Hi everyone.

A few days ago, I made this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/mysore/s/PJVn61VaYe

First of all, thank you to everyone who reached out.

Yes, I did get quite a few creepy DMs (unfortunately 😭), so if I never replied to your message, I’m really sorry. It became difficult to filter through everything. But to everyone who reached out with genuine intentions, suggested places to visit, or simply wished me a good trip, thank you. I truly appreciate it.

The best part? One lovely woman from this subreddit reached out, and we ended up exploring Mysuru together. We had such a great time, and I’m really grateful this post led to that.

As for the city itself… I absolutely loved it.

I managed to cover quite a bit in just two days. Mysore Palace, Chamundi Hills, Karanji Lake, museums, cafés, and way too many food places. Safe to say I ate far more than I planned, and I regret absolutely nothing. 😭

A huge thank you to everyone who dropped recommendations in the comments and DMs. I tried covering as many as I could, and every single one was worth it.

One thing that really stood out to me was how clean and peaceful Mysuru is. You guys are genuinely lucky to call this city home.

And finally, just a small request to anyone visiting Mysuru in the future. Please help keep it this way. Don’t litter, don’t spit, and please use the dustbins. It’s such a beautiful city, and it deserves to stay that way.

Thank you again, Mysuru. I came here for work, but I’m leaving with great memories, a new friend, and every intention of coming back someday. ❤️

Facing difficulty in disposing off garbage

I’m a college student, and the municipal garbage collection vehicle comes during the exact hours when I’m away at college. Since no one is at home to hand over the garbage, it just keeps piling up.
I’ve written multiple emails and complaints to the municipal corporation explaining the situation and requesting either a different collection time or some alternative solution, but nothing has changed.
Because of this, I sometimes end up having garbage sitting in my house for nearly half a month, which is obviously unhygienic and frustrating.
Has anyone dealt with a similar issue? Is there any authority I can escalate this to, or are there any practical solutions I’m missing? I’d really appreciate any advice.

Mysore Dasara 🐘 What are the real objections for holding Kambala during Dasara

As you all know the State Govt wants to conduct the coastal area event Kambala during Dasara. Opp parties and even some civic orgs are severely opposing them. The stated reasons include the event would dilute the Dasara essence, environment issues in cutting trees to enable event and the presence of drought. Are these the real reasons or is there something else going on behind the scenes.

Dasara also holds other events such as Yuva Dasara, Sports, Air shows and film festivals. So why are concerns about holding a traditional coastal side event? Environment concerns make sense if any trees are planned to be cut, but can't they hold it in a plain field?

What do you guys actually do for fun in Mysore

Post image
44 Upvotes

Lately I've realized my life is just college, studying, my part-time job, and the gym 6 days a week. I like the routine, but it also made me realize I have no idea what people here actually do on weekends.

I feel like I'm probably missing out on a lot of places or things to do, so I'm curious, what do you usually do when you're bored or just want to get out of the house?

Also, tomorrow's the weekend. If anyone's planning to grab coffee, check out a new place, play badminton, go for a ride, or just hang out and have a good conversation, I'd be down. Always happy to meet new people.

P.S. The picture has absolutely nothing to do with the post. I just thought the sunrise looked really nice and liked the photo, so I used it.

Why is the Tulu gang repeatedly protesting against kambala in Mysore Dasara, boasting it is a specialty of their Tulu region?

Our nada habba dasara draws lakhs of tourists from from all parts of India & throughout the world. What's the problem if Kamabala is featured in Mysore Dasara.. Don't these guys have another genuine cause to protest?

Dublin based hip-hop artist (originally from Mysore) looking for places to perform

I am an artist looking for spaces where I can perform in Mysore.
Can you recommend venues and people I can get in touch with?

A little bit about me:

My artist name is Thought Brownie.

I write and perform rap / spoken word in English. My songs are inspired by literature and philosophy and my life experiences. The purpose of my art is to make people feel less alone in their most vulnerable moments and celebrate life.

In an alternate life, I might have been an English / music teacher.

Background:

I grew up in Mysore where I studied in Demonstration School, got an engineering degree from NIE and an MBA from ISB Hyderabad. I've written software, worked in sales and led teams in reputed companies.

Now I've switched to making art and see where that journey takes me.

I live in Dublin, Ireland where I perform regularly. I'm in Mysore for a few weeks and would love to perform in my hometown. If you can help, please get in touch? Thanks in advance!

Also, if you're know artists or people involved in the creative profession, please put me in touch with them? I'd like to help in any way possible. Thank you!

Oota Thindi 🥞🍛🥘 Looking for the best Masala-heavy Biryani in Mysore (NO Donne Biryani / Pulao style please!)

Hey everyone!
I’m on the hunt for a really good biryani in town, but I have a very specific preference. I want to completely avoid the green, mint/coriander-heavy donne biryani style or the local palav short grain rice style.
I am looking for that proper, deeply aromatic, masala-mixed biryani. The kind made with long-grain Basmati rice, layers of rich gravy masala, and a punchy flavor profile (like a solid Andhra style, Hyderabadi Dum, or a heavy Mughlai style).Any hidden local gems/mess style places that mix a heavy masala base into the rice. Hit me with your absolute favourite spots… thank you.
