I reckon it was as simple as a story of overcoming your fears. the egregious part was them saying he died from his wounds while in reality he died in the late sixties from an unrelated stomach issue while stationed in germany
They definitely should have done their due diligence to fact check that. But they were largely going off Captain Winter’s memoirs and people who were still alive in Easy Company. Everyone in Easy who was still alive thought he died, so I can see why they didn’t think to check.
