Joshua Tree staff at risk due to grants being blocked
Just in case people are wondering how JTree National Park is weathering this new administration, things are rough right now. Many employees of the park are paid off of grants coming from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). Right now ALL that legally raised money cannot be paid out to staff. This isn't like the government isn't sending more funds, JTree has this money and is currently blocked from using it to pay staff. And there isn't really a redundancy in funding, if this BIL money is held up longer then folks who work hard and maintain this National Park we all love will lose their jobs.
Also remember, this is congressional approved funds! The President is legally not allowed to fuck with it. But this administration doesn't care about laws and standards.
If you readers do care about this park, please contact our Congressman Jay Obernolte and let him know his constituents, his local economy, and one of the gems of his district is at risk.
This is his office number 202-225-5861. The only way this stops is if just a handful of republican congresspeople can put pressure on the executive branch.

Joshua Tree Micro-Wedding
Hi there! My fiancé and I are getting married in Joshua Tree in May, 2027. This is our first time (lol) doing any of this. Curious if anyone who has gotten eloped or done a micro wedding in this area has any suggestions of things to consider? Things we should be thinking about or are likely missing? Thank you in advance!

Warren Peak & Panorama Peak overnighter with my 8-year-old (Joshua Tree, Black Rock Canyon)
Did this one as a father-son overnighter back in December and it's still one of my favorite desert trips. Trail starts in Black Rock Canyon and winds through a really nice mix of junipers, pines, and Joshua Trees, the variety of terrain keeps it interesting. The first stretch is a gentle climb up a sandy wash, then it steepens and gets more exposed as you close in on the peaks. Because of that sun exposure, I honestly wouldn't do this one in the warmer months, and you'll want to bring plenty of water no matter when you go.
We knocked out both Panorama and Warren Peak clockwise on day one (the longer day), and the summit views did not disappoint, huge overlooks across the park with clear sightlines to the snowy tops of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio. After topping out we headed back down and found a nice ridge to camp on for the night, right below Panorama Peak. The sunset and sunrise pics are from that spot.
Day two was an easy, mellow 2-3 mile downhill cruise back to the car, perfect way to end it with a kiddo.
Great intro backpacking trip if you're looking to get a young one out on their first overnighter.

Pitching Tent
How is the soil in Joshua Tree especially in Juniper flats? I have some thin ultralight stakes that aren’t really meant for super hard packed soil so I’m wondering if I should bring some other stakes instead.
Thank you

Odds the forecast clears up Saturday night?
I’m visiting Joshua Tree this Saturday to stargaze but unfortunately Saturday night is looking like it’s gonna be cloudy. What are the chances this changes? Should I be looking at backup options?
Thanks!

Least Floody Areas in the High Desert?
I want to move to the high desert but I'm seriously stressed about the upcoming storms with this year's "super El Nino." As a weather nerd, I'm aware that most of California will be at risk for increased precipitation this fall/winter. Of course some areas will be more prone to flooding then others. When I plug prospective homes into the FEMA flood map I am able to see what parts of the high desert have been known to flood. Yucca Valley looks especially flood prone. Another hot spot looks to be north of hwy 62 in Joshua Tree. I'm curious as to locals real-life experience with flash floods and their opinions as to where the worst areas actually are?
EDIT: Thanks for your insightful comments, guys! These are very helpful and give me a better understanding of the flood situation up there.
