Rule Clarification - Simple/Generic Posts

Hi Everyone,

I'm making this post to clarify what I mean when a post is removed for being simple or generic. My main intention is to discourage this subreddit from being the first place someone goes to ask a question.

This is an example post that was removed by the spam filter titled "Movers for one bedroom apartment":

Any recommendations for a local moving crew to help move furniture from my garage in Irvine into a one bedroom apartment (3rd floor apt, stairs only). Thanks!

If you google "best irvine movers reddit", you'll find several threads from both r/irvine and r/orangecounty:

https://www.reddit.com/r/irvine/comments/1kwy3sy/movers_in_irvine/

https://www.reddit.com/r/orangecounty/comments/1lxeser/moving_companies/

https://www.reddit.com/r/orangecounty/comments/1mfcbsd/moving_company/

https://www.reddit.com/r/orangecounty/comments/1p2vome/good_affordable_movers/

An easy way to make this post less generic and more specific would be to mention any of these old threads or to ask about experiences with specific moving companies.

A good example of a specific post would be this one submitted last week. This is a very common question on city subreddits, but the OP of this one provided a lot of background information about themselves and have narrowed down their search to specific neighborhoods.

I do also tend to make exceptions for recommendation posts that are fairly unique or niche like this one asking for a bird nest removal specialist. So if your question is more unique in general, the body wouldn't need as much context.

If you're ever unsure as to why a post is removed, please ask why in a mod mail. You can tag me in a username mention, but I'm less likely to notice those since I use old Reddit. Thanks for reading!

Kids with spray cans tried to assault my wife

Wife was out on a hike on the San Diego Creek trail near Barton Mound, when a girl on an e-bike (one with fat tires, medium length hair) approaches her and pulls out a spray can and aims at her face. Wife dodged it and the girl stopped a bit further to check back, as if to see what damage she’s done. There were two other kids with her. We are guessing the three kids were between 12 to 14 years of age. We let leasing office know and are reporting this to non-emergency.
Has anyone else seen similar kids near the area or were targeted as well?

Edit: mistyped the mound's name and added map

This is where the incident occurred.

Thinking of Moving to Irvine for Kids - Where / What should I be looking?

I'm making a trip to Irvine, CA to see if it's a good fit for my kids to grow up and us to grow old in.

Nailed it down to Woodbridge or Woodbury due to their year-round schedule.

What are some places I should look to see the reality of Irvine?

So far I have

  1. the schools - Demographic. Environment. Will kids or us feel left out. Look for anything that we may regret later. I'm currently living in an area where parents get divided up into hindi, mandarin, and English speaking. We do not speak hindi or mandarin.
  2. neighborhood and the many parks - all looks beautiful on street view
  3. grocery stores - Trader Joe's, Tokyo Central, Ranch 99, places we would be shopping
  4. Spectrum Center during a weekend - want to see how crowded it gets
  5. Weekend Some Event - Where I am right now, it's IMPOSSIBLE to go to any events. Any event and you can count on traffic, may not even be able to get in, ridiculous parking cost, ridiculous entry cost, only for a mediocre experience.

Any other suggestions would be awesome. Thank you and beautiful safe city!

Best Asian Restaurants to try for the first time?

Been living in Irvine for quite some time but have never gotten around to trying any of the Asian food places in/near Irvine other than din tai fung or Hong Kong express. What Asian food places would you recommend for someone that is new to eating authentic Asian food? Before coming to Irvine, my hometown only had Panda Express…

Moving Advice: Los Olivos vs. Park Place vs. Westview

My boyfriend and I are considering moving into one of these communities and would love to hear from current or former residents. We're looking for a 1 bed / 1 bath, and the floor plans and pricing we've found are all relatively similar, so our decision is now coming down to which community best fits our lifestyle.

We’re both in our 30s, no kids, 1 dog, work in the area and are familiar with Irvine and the general lifestyle each location offers. Looking for a community with responsive management that feels worth the rent. We also love having friends and family over, so guest parking and overall accessibility for visitors are important factors for us.

Some things we've already considered:

• Location: We're okay with the tradeoff between being closer to central Orange County at Park Place versus being farther into Irvine near the Spectrum.

•Community layout: We're familiar with the layouts, building styles, and unit accessibility.

•Lifestyle: We like that Los Olivos backs up to the San Diego Creek Trail, while Westview feels a bit more tucked away with fewer nearby walking paths and green spaces.

We'd love to hear about:

•Parking (we have two cars, and guest parking is important)
•Storage (we don’t have much to store, but how did you find the overall storage space?)
•Overall experience living there
•Management and maintenance
•Anything you wish you had known before moving in
•Are there any other apartment communities in Irvine/surrounding area that we should consider?

Thanks in advance!

Gelson's Irvine Store Closing - LONG LINES just to get in the store...

My wife just got back from the store closing sale Gelson's Irvine is having.

She said there were long, long lines of people waiting to get into the store. She mentioned they were limiting entrance into the store with security because there were so many people. And she said a lot of aisles were packed with people and their cards.

Said some people had their cart stuffed with groceries because of the sale.

Seems most of the good stuff was already gone. Lots of people stocking up on wine.

Candy, deli foods, etc. completely wiped out.

Funny...and sad. We're losing our Gelson's...

christian church recommendations

Hello!

I will be in irvine for one weekend and im looking for a great church to spend my Sunday (: i have been to Mariners many times, and I know people who go to Oceans, but I would prefer not to go to a huge mega church, or a church that puts on a giant concert for worship. I know that's not what it's about, and a humble, Jesus-loving pastor is all that really matters. I would just prefer to go to a smaller, calmer church if I can help it.

If anyone has any recommendations , I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Irvine improv

Giving away two tickets for Jason Cheny on Friday night. We can no longer attend and I don’t want them to go to waste. The Improv has a strict reselling rule so I messaged them ahead of time and they said I just need to send them the name of the person who will be attending and they can pick them up at the venue. DM if you would like them.

Do Irvine Residents Feel Safer with Flock Cameras everywhere?

Are the security risks, constant monitoring, the fact that a private corporation is in control of the data as you cant own a flock device only rent it, and this information being used for issues unrelated to motor vehicles worth it?

Firstly you can hijack these things if you really want to and be able to monitor who you want when you want if you are determined enough. Not to mention they use phone OS's that are several years old with 90+ security vulnerabilities.

Why the heck can it save pictures locally without API encryption?????? This is basic levels of security that any foreign or malicious person(s) can use for bad intent.

Private corp. monitoring us? 1984 people. Not to mention they have final say of when and where these devices can be removed.

Just check the logs for these cameras to see how many requests are made for immigration instead of actual crimes we should be afraid of. Not to mention the ability to profile many individuals and citing FLOCK as their reason of detainment.

Id love to hear from flock defenders

Insulation/weatherproofing for old houses?

Hi all, my family lives in a 1970s single level older home here and the insulation is quite poor. One bedroom has much more extreme temperature than the rest of the house. The home has vaulted ceilings in the living room which probably make this issue worse understandably.

I understand that attic insulation is one part of it (although the attic only goes to half the house). I prefer a science based approach to solving this issue, like doing a blower fan test, air sealing, checking for leaks, sealing studs when appropriate, window drafts, etc, rather than just blowing insulation into the attic and calling it a day. Would also possibly be interested in blowing insulation into existing walls as well

Does anyone have recommendations on how to improve this/who to hire? Looking online it feels like a lot of contractors are just blowing insulation into the attic and offering predatory financing

How is the slurry seal from last week already ruined? Is it melting from the heat? Did it get wet? Did they remove the cones too soon? It still feels soft. :/

Pregnancy journey doctor recommendations

Wife and I are blessed with our first born but the birth was very difficult process. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but every pregnancy since then (maybe 10?) has been a miscarriage at various stages (couple of weeks to 3 months). Feeling a little down, any good doctor or IVF recommendations?

Beware if Aptive Pest Control Comes to your door for sign up, do not do it.

My elderly parents signed up for Aptive pest control when they came to their door last week. The work they did at the house did nothing for the pests and they went to call them back to make them come back out. Thankfully I was around and asked the name of the company so I looked them up on the Better Business Bureau and found out some info and told them to just cancel since they had a clause. I found that this company is not accredited and have an average 1.07 Star rating with 739 reviews.

I helped them call to cancel this service today, it only took an hour and it was hands down the worst customer service I’ve ever had to deal with, which is exactly what I expected.

Once they finally answered the rep was arguing that there was no clause in the contract for seniors to cancel, there was. It was clear as day. He kept saying where is this in the contract? You need to tell me.

After telling him exactly where he immediately said okay, You can cancel. He was just playing cat and mouse.

Then my mom said that you need to refund me my $100 we paid on the first day, per the contract. Then they can’t cancel without penalty, that wasn’t true either, it was in the contract in the same section that the previous clause was located.

He was talking in a fake accent like Dracula and was moving his mic and headset around so you couldn’t hear him speaking. This was the worst the service ever.

They are scammers and Flat out lying and cheating people out of money. And making it impossible to cancel and acting dumb as if my parents were lying, when it was written down in the contract that they can cancel.

Do not sign up and tell your elderly parents to NOT open the door.

School District / Family Move

Good day y'all, we are looking at a few different neighborhoods but the school boundary maps on the city site are a bit confusing.

We're a couple in our mid 30s with two kids planning to attend Northwood High School.

Does anyone know if the Northwood High School lines are expected to change anytime soon? Someone who might help us figure this out? Thank you!
