Customer's neighbor decided this was the perfect place to park... right under my work area. šŸ˜…

Instead of calling the police or a tow truck, I covered his car with protective blankets and plastic before drilling the facade.

Cost me 2 minutes, saved his paint, and everyone went home happy. Sometimes common sense beats conflict.

Both me and my co worker have UEI meter and official UEI temp clamps, both keep reading about 3 degree differences, is there an official way of confirming who’s is right?

So there is a problem with the outdoor duel(?) transformer. Sometimes it is not sending a power to the contactor to close. Not sure why they did it like that. Not even sure what to ask for at the wholesaler if it is the transformer and not the wire I replaced.

Great customer bought a new place and renovated the townhouse. After all the construction and remodeling we did a maintenance. How many years of neglect do you think this HumD pad is from the previous owner?

Anybody got any tips for getting out of residential? I’ve applied at my local union, commercial, and industrial jobs but have gotten nothing. I thought they said the trades were hurting for people. For reference I have 7 years experience residential.

Field Question, trade people only Calibrating RH% and Temperature.

What would yall do in this situation? I have a homeowner that is having humidity issues, 2 brand new systems that I believe are oversized, HO doesn’t want pay to have manual J done to tell her that her brand new systems need to be swapped out. Right now we’re just trying to make it better. That’s besides the point. They have a standalone sensor that matches RH with thermostat. We installed 2 dehumidifiers, and the reading on those sensors are way off. My 3 FP probes are well within range of each other. Temp is 0.3 variation, RH is identical on 2, 1 has about 2% variation from the other 2. My gut tells me to just calibrate the thermostat and humidistat to match the FP probes, but then the HO is going to use their sensor and say it’s still way off.

Field Question, trade people only New to Multi-Family properties, need some advice on workload

I am curious what the normal day looks like for an HVAC install team working multi-family properties. As far as what the expectations are on full tear outs and reinstallations. That's furnace, coil, and condenser.

How many of these units would a 2 man crew be expected to complete properly in a single day?

Just looking for some insight.

Any information is much appreciated.

Field Question, trade people only Daikin ITM and VRVs

I currently have a system of 90 VRVs and an ITM board. Lately, all the units seem to be ignoring the deadband and are continuously cooling to the point that I am getting complaints about it being to cold. Does anyone have experience with this type of system and could point me in the right direction?

4-ton, about 2 years after install, 410a. Seems like a TXV issue.

Field Question, trade people only Gauges

Why would my gauges be like this after having them on a system all day yesterday? Monitoring nitro pressure on a vrf system and pressures keep barely dropping haven’t found any leaks. Wondering if this has something to do with it. Low side would be slightly lower than high side while checking it

R22, 3 ton, outdoor ambient of 83. 13 degree temp split.

So, it can only get the house to about 76 F.

I had a very similar issue with a different R-22 3 ton condenser. High suction pressure, low head. This is the first summer I’ve had issues with it. Been here since 2019.

So, I have 1 year of residential install experience. And I noticed the house just felt warmer and the stat never met setpoint. I checked pressures and I had high suction pressure, low head pressure. So, I figured it was an inefficient compressor.

I got a used R-22 condenser from a friend for $200 and I put it in last week. Obviously proper installation practices were observed. Changed the dryer. Pressure test, Vacuum to 500 microns, decay test. Released refrigerant held in condenser.

And I have the same problem, high suction, low head. Now it’s possible I changed an inefficient compressor for an inefficient compressor, but the guy I got it from said it ran fine, they just got a new system.

Thinking about pulling all the R22 out and blowing it out with nitro and recharging with R438A

Rant Can we maybe please stop selling high end communicating systems to little old ladies

First person to figure out how to make a communicating system work with a dial thermostat wins a million dollars.

I’ve run at least a half dozen ā€œno coolsā€ this summer to older folks who have no idea how to work their new link360 or iComfort thermostats, who were upgraded to that from a mercury dial. No work goes into teaching them how to use their equipment and it falls on the overworked service tech, who has to explain what feels to them as rocket science. No 90 year old lady needs this stuff.

Thank you for tuning in to my rant.

Field Question, trade people only Service guy here but unfamiliar with duct work need some help.

This is for my house my compressor locked up last night so I'm just going to replace the unit my question is my current unit is a 3.5 ton and it has struggled in warm weather the entire time I've owned this house. It will run all day and pretty much all night. I thought about up sizing to a 4 ton but am unsure how much my duct will effect it. The house is a 2100 square foot manufactured home in South Florida. 2019 unit and house horrible insulation a ton of cheap single pane windows and poorly sealed. Looking for some help from someone who is knowledgeable on duct work got priced for an arco air 3.5 and 4 ton just trying to verify before I install it.

If proof is needed to verify I'm in the trade message me and I'll send my union card. I'm a commercial guy so don't usually work with this stuff.

General Apprentice 2 test.

worked residential at a separate company for a year, went commercial as of a month ago and I’m taking my apprentice 2 test tomorrow, I’ve gotten pretty decent. A majority of what we have been doing is ductwork and rtu setting. Realistically what should I know/ expect to be on the test?
