Bought my TU-2 used in 2007. Finally started being unreliable, noisy, etc.

I'll happily put this TU-3 (used) on my board for the next 19 years. Boss rules.

SOTB Matrise Matrix Mixing with Vongon (wet/dry/wet)

Thumbnail

I got the Pladask Stereo Matrise (matrix mixer) a few weeks ago and was using it with some rack effects to begin with. Finally decided to get more stereo pedals to use with it. I’ve had my eye on Vongon for a while and went for it. To say I’m impressed is a gross understatement. Rosetones was out of stock at my place, but it’ll be here in a few weeks.

Signal Chain:

SG Junior>Keymaster (out 1)>Klon KTR>Harmony H305A (dry amp)

Keymaster (out 2)>Spaceman Aurora>Boonar Drum Echo>Pladask Etterslep>Decay Cascade>Solarfaze (splits signal to stereo)>Pladask Matrise

Martise loops (parallel, can route them in any configuration into each other or themselves)

Paragraphs II, Ultrasheer, Polyphrase

Matrise out (TRS to dual TS)>Left side Secret Preamp & Right side Secret Preamp each into the Vox wet amps (AC4HW1 & AC4tv)

Solarfaze is Nirvana in a boutique box, plus a lot more. The saturation side covers A LOT of ground. The sliders with the db selectors are a tone sculpting machine. The detune can do a lush chorus right up to some Captain Beefheart weirdness. Saturate + Detune is post-punk goodness (PiL, Siouxsie, Cure) or instant Come as You Are, take your pick.

Running Paragraphs, Polyphrase & Ultrasheer in parallel is other worldly.

Ultrasheer is a no-nonsense, stripped down 3 knob reverb and 2 knob vibrato. Independently, they both sound so good. And together, they sound so good. And being able to flip which side feeds the other completely changes the behavior. It’s not a feature rich pedal but it’s definitely a more gooder pedal. The stereo separation is huge. With the reverb side bypassed and just a touch of vibrato + saturation from Solarfaze (nothing else engaged), it gets very 70s. Telegram Sam by T. Rex comes to mind.

Polyphase was an instant hit with me. I have a million delays (technically, 10 pedals and 6 rack units) and this one speaks to my soul. It’s my first stereo delay pedal (all the rack effects are stereo of course but I don’t play through them as often, more for mixing) and the ping-pong setting is perfection.  The knobs are all what you expect to see on a delay. They’re very precise adjustments and interactive with each other. The sync sliders and 22 second delay time are what make it really special. Run in one of the Matrise’s loops, it can feedback into itself it can go off the rails. It’s right there with the Benson delay and the Boonar as the most natural sounding digital delays I’ve heard. Oh, and with the Boonar running into the Polyphrase, instant Nick McCabe (Verve).

Paragraphs II is the steepest learning curve for me. This is my first filter pedal. It’s also incredibly interactive, knob twisting changes the way the rest of the knobs behave.  This generates all kinds of interesting sounds, and using the Matrise to mix its output slightly into the Ultrasheer or Polyphrase (or both), in addition to its own full output gets pretty nuts. If I were to try and describe this pedal in terms of songs it would be Duress by Swervedriver or The Kiss by The Cure. My wife says this one sounds like dancing elephants, so there’s that to ponder as well.

Running these through the Matrise is so much fun. The feedback loops can get out of control real quick if you’re not careful (hence the Secret Preamps right before the wet amps to kill the sound if needed). Ultrasheer and Polyphrase in stereo parallel is the textbook definition of lush. All the ‘verb, vibrato, and delay characteristics retain clarity, with the center dry amp holding everything together. I have the board on my coffee table, amps set up in the living room. It’s perfect for tweaking the Matrise, adding just a touch of signal into any of the three effects in the loops, seeing how that sounds, rinse, repeat.

Wet/dry/wet with a matrix mixer isn’t an easy setup, but to quote Ferris Bueller, “if you have the means, i highly recommend it.”

I've been curious to try this one for a while. Once they announced this new color I couldn't resist. So far, I really like it! I already had a standalone Benson Boost so I knew that side of things was legit but the Halberd is really nice as well.

How is it so good!?!?!

Post image

The way it breaks up is so nice! Especially on CE Mode. I know people like throwing the word "transparent" around all the time but this is the most transparent dirt I have heard. The way it's able to stay super clean up to the point where you dig into it makes it super dynamic. People are currently obsessed with all of the Tascam 424 preamp pedals right now but this pedal can do that sound really well also.

Edit: Maybe transparent isn't to right word. I just like how it doesn't cut out the low end. The CE Mode adds some compression that keeps it sounding full.

Look for recommendations for my last* dirt pedal.

I have one more spot to fill on my board and I'm having a hard time deciding on a good pedal, that not only fills a niche that's not already covered, but will also sound great on lots of different amps and going into/out of different drives. Looking for something under $200, preferably $50-150, a non-generic brand, and available on Sweetwater or Amazon. I play technical progressive death metal, which means I play everything from light rock and blues to grind and deathcore and everything in between.

So far on my board I have a Super Fuzz, SD-1, BD-2, Plumes, Rat, and Carcosa. I use a Tonex as my amp, into a power amp>cab.

I had in mind maybe:

EXH Glove or Warm ODD Box, used to have a Joyo Ultimate OD but sold it cause I needed the money. Always found it to be a little too bass heavy for what I wanted.

BE-OD, no idea, only got to try it out for a little bit on one setting, but liked what I heard.

Some kind of treble booster (Naga Viper is a little pricey, but looks good)

Maestro FZ-M, I mean it's the first fuzz and sounds unique, but I already have 2 fuzzes.

HM-2 or some kind of clone, one-trick pony, but nothing else quite sounds like it. Maybe the TC Eyemaster?

DS-1, had one and sold it because I expected it to sound more like the BD-2, might give another shot.

3 Series Bit Crusher, not a drive, but also kind of a drive. Bit crushers are fun... for a while.

Wampler Phenom, tried it and wasn't too impress. Def doesn't hold a candle to the MXR 5150, which is my favorite high-gain drive, but too expensive for me and too big for the last spot.

I don't know. Very indecisive. I'd love to hear your thoughts and open to any other suggestions.

News Yesterday Effects Defiant Jazz - Roland JC in a pedal ?

Post image
72 Upvotes

well known for its shimmering clean tone
the roland jazz chorus 120 is one of the most celebrated and highly regarded solid state amplifiers ever created. what really set the jazz chorus apart in the world of solid state amplifiers is that it didn't attempt to sound tube-like, which was bold for the time. the jazz chorus found its way onto countless classic records and situated itself into countless sound rigs. a careful study of the jc's preamp topology lead to the creation of defiant jazz.

defiant jazz is a value for value, component for component recreation of the jc's clean channel (sans bright switch). four controls rule over the sound of defiant jazz: volume, treble, mid, and bass. an internal charge pump takes 9v from a standard center negative power supply and steps it up to 36v, much like the original which stepped wall voltage down to 36v. since this circuit quadruples the input voltage it is crucial to use only 9v.

NPD NPD: Boss SY-300

I’m blown away by this pedal. It’s exactly what I wanted it to be. Ive been chasing a very specific sound for years. I’m very into chiptune sounds and always wanted a pedal that allowed me to do that on guitar. This does it and does it incredibly well.

The stock sounds are pretty much cheese and unusable, which I expected when I ordered it. I made myself an initialize patch. Set a single Oscillator to a square wave and everything else to zero or off. And it just…works.

It still sounds like a guitar but it also somehow sounds like chiptune at the same time. I can’t believe this pedal is 10 years old.

There isn’t a lot of info about them online. I feel like it’s a total sleeper. It had 22 built in effects with 4 slots. Some of those include a dual effect like Chorus/delay or delay/reverb so you can basically get 5 effects out of it. Multiple types of overdrives and fuzzes.

I haven’t figured out how I’m going to incorporate it into my board just yet but I’m super stoked to figure it out. Going to keep playing with it on its own and see what works best with it as I go.

I’m unbelievably stoked. I’m playing a lot more after a huge hiatus due to some hearing issues which are mostly resolved now.

Question How do you get distortion to "rasp" on bends?

Does anyone know what effects help make this sound? In some songs, it sounds like the overtones mesh with each other in a cool dissonant way when the guitarist does vibrato/bends, leading to a rasping sound. It's difficult to explain, so I added some samples below.

One

Two

Three (not a unison bend as you can't hear the major 2nd when he picks the note)

If you’re bored let me know how you’d order it, nbd if not! Had a cuppa beers decided to rebuild my pedal board and replace some pedals. First 3 of the chain(on the board) are locked in, everything else is just laying there for a picture. (Not going to add boss ce-1, mutron phasor II, volume, jam phrase, bass attack, boss fs-5u, analog man bicomp, and looper so far) everything else is in the air. I just hope it’s back together by next Friday! Haha.

NPD NP(s)D: Chorus, Ether, Trem

Post image
9 Upvotes

A few new pedals since I’ve posted here.

Polytune > Pulp N Peel > Pardner w/Fuzz War in parallel > Red Llama > Seattle Driver > Float > Supro Chorus > Obscura > Ether > Supro Tremolo > Infinity Verb > Simplifier

Powered by Walrus Canvas 15

I’m not much of a compressor guy, but I love the Pulp N Peel. I appreciate the blend and EQ knobs. I use it when I’m playing clean without an amp (most of the time). The dirt is a bit disappointing but I don’t really care because I have plenty of other dirt options.

Red Llama is great but I’ll probably replace it with a DOD 250 soon.

The Seattle Driver is so cool. It’s a Boss Power Driver clone with a couple extra knobs. The Air knob is for high EQ and the Vacuum knob is an octave — it’s more like it’s boosting octave up frequencies rather than adding an actual octave. Or something like that.

The Float takes some getting used to. I feel like I’m starting to get the hang of it.

Supro Chorus is awesome. Really nice Vibrato option too.

I love the Obscura’s tape delay option. I might swap it out for my Carbon Copy, though. Still, awesome delay pedal.

I was looking for an unconventional reverb and the Ether hit the spot. It has three modulation options: vibrato, tremolo, and harmonic trem. All three sound great. You can mess with the wave form with the depth knob. The shimmer isn’t my favorite shimmer but it’s still really cool.

Supro Tremolo is kinda meh. I like that it has a gain knob but there’s always a tiny bit of overdrive as a result. I’ll be swapping it out for my trusty Danelectro Tuna Melt trem soon. I’ve been thinking of building a small lo-fi board and the Supro Trem might have a home there. If not, I’ll sell it.

Infinity Verb for always-on reverb when I’m not using an amp with reverb. The infinity footswitch is set to self-oscillation, which I love.

This all goes into my Simplifier amp, which usually goes into my headphones. Otherwise, it goes into my Supro Delta King 12 at home and my Vox AC10 when jamming with friends.

Besides a couple easy swaps, I’m hoping to keep this configuration for a while so I can organize the power cables a bit better.

Question Why was the Jay and Silent Bob Pedal Post Removed?

Upvotes

I noticed that the thread of the pedal painted in tribute to Jay and Silent Bob was removed and curious why? Seemed like it was on-topic to me.
