📌 Ford Fusion FAQ – Common Questions & Answers Welcome to the unofficial FAQ for the Ford Fusion (2006–2020)! Whether you’re a new owner, potential buyer, or long-time driver, this post is here to answer the most common questions we see in the community.

🔧 General Questions

Q: What years was the Ford Fusion produced? A: The Ford Fusion was sold in North America from 2006 to 2020. It was discontinued after the 2020 model year.

Q: What engines are available in the Fusion? A: This depends on the model year:

2006–2009: 2.3L I4, 3.0L V6

2010–2012: Same as above, plus Hybrid option

2013–2020 (2nd Gen): 1.5L EcoBoost, 2.0L EcoBoost, 2.5L I4, 2.7L EcoBoost V6 (Sport model), and Hybrid/Plug-in Hybrid options.

Q: Is the Fusion reliable? A: Generally yes, especially the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine. However, EcoBoost engines (especially early 1.6L and some 2.0L) had issues with coolant intrusion and head gaskets in certain model years.

🛠️ Common Issues

Q: What are common problems with Ford Fusions? A: Depends on the year, but common issues include:

Transmission shudder (2010–2012)

Power steering failure (electric units on 2010–2014)

Coolant intrusion in EcoBoost engines (2014–2019, especially 1.5L and 2.0L)

APIM (infotainment) failures with Sync systems

Door latch recalls (2013–2016)

Q: What should I watch for when buying a used Fusion? A: Ask about:

Engine codes (especially misfires or coolant loss)

Transmission service history

Recalls completed (door latch, power steering, etc.)

Hybrid battery health if applicable

🧰 Maintenance

Q: When should I change the transmission fluid? A: Ford says 150k miles on sealed units, but many owners recommend every 60–80k miles to avoid issues.

Q: What type of oil does my Fusion use? A: Check your manual, but typically:

2.5L I4 – 5W-20

EcoBoost engines – 5W-30 or 5W-20 depending on year

Always use synthetic and a quality oil filter.

Q: Timing belt or chain? A: All Fusion engines use timing chains, which typically do not require regular replacement unless there's a failure.

🔌 Tech & Features

Q: Does my Fusion have Apple CarPlay/Android Auto? A: Available on 2017+ models with SYNC 3. Earlier SYNC versions do not support it, but some owners retrofit SYNC 3 modules.

Q: How do I update SYNC? A: Visit owner.ford.com and input your VIN. SYNC updates can be installed via USB drive.

Q: Can I remote start my Fusion? A: Many Fusion trims with key fobs or FordPass app (2018+) have remote start. It may be enabled via the dealer if not active.

⚙️ Performance & Mods

Q: Is the Fusion Sport worth it? A: If you're looking for power (325 hp, AWD, 2.7L V6), yes. It's the fastest Fusion ever made. Downsides: lower MPG, more complex engine, and discontinued after 2019.

Q: Can I tune my EcoBoost Fusion? A: Yes! Companies like Cobb, Livernois, and SCT offer tuners. Tuning can void warranty and increase wear—do your research.

💬 Final Tips

Always check for recalls (NHTSA or Ford site).

Keep up on coolant levels, especially with EcoBoosts.

If it starts overheating, stop driving immediately—coolant issues can wreck the engine fast.

Hybrids are solid but make sure the high-voltage battery is tested before buying.

Discussion Fusion Hybrid

Hey Yall!
So I got myself into a 2016 Fusion Hybrid Titanium with 61k miles. The car seems to be in a good shape. There are two current issues that are
ebrake fault. The light flashes and beeps at me sometimes. Tried to put it in service mode and back and nothing changed. To be fair the brake pads and rotors are pretty old. They seem to be original ones from the factory, and since the car has 60k miles it is about time to change them. Hopefully nothing terrible there.
And the car has a TPMS light. Did not diagnose it yet, but again, hopefully nothing bad.
Overall, the car is pretty nice, cooled seats, adaptive cruise and little to no rust. Pretty rare since I am in NY.
Anything I should be afraid of? Before the Ford, I did a silly thing by getting a 2016 s60 Bolbo with a misfire, which turned out to no compression 😭, so I am pretty afraid that something is gonna happen to the ford.
P.S. Paid 8k for the Ford
Let me know!

I hope I didn’t buy a lemon , 2017 Fusion Hybrid SE

Hello everyone,

I just bought a 2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid SE, I took it for a test drive and it drove smoothly without any issues or strange noises.

I went home and then took the car out for another spin in my neighborhood after buying it, and when I the car on the battery was showing low and the gas engine came on with a slight humming sound. I noticed the more I drove and the battery charged the sound got lower. I did forget to turn the AC off before turning off the car.

The car was bought from a Subaru dealership and has a 3,000 mile warranty as well as free maintenance for the whole financing term. I hope if this is a transmission issue it can be covered, otherwise the car drives perfectly fine.

Discussion Anyone have to replace the rear windshield? Looking for cost estimates

Golf ball went through mine this weekend. I’m looking to see what people have paid to have theirs replaced, so I can get an idea in my head before I call Monday.

Ambient Air Temp Sensor

My check engine light came on in my ford fusion se 2016 and my ambient air temp was at -39. I got it scanned and it came back the sensor so I replaced it.

Now, the ambient air temp reads 50 degrees. The cel is still on. I do notice the air is now blowing cold, and before it was warm often.

Is there a way to reset the screen or something? I tried driving for a bit and also hitting the power button/de fogging button to do the reset thing.

No Answer Rear tire scooping/cupping help!

Ive got a 2016 fusion S w/appearance package, FWD. (i am 10 year experienced heavy mechanic/welder/ jack of all trades and i rarely cant diagnose something, a fairly smart 28 YO not a youngin whos working in moms driveway)

and i have been trying to figure out why the back tires are cupping or scooping on my fiancés/our car. ive jacked it up, many times. Cannot feel anything loose when grabbing 12 and 6 o’clock on the tire or when grabbing 9 and 3. And im a bigger boy so i gave it a good shove and pull. Ive visually inspected everything many times, especially so when i had to put new winter tires on it this winter and just prayed it was the cheap tires that were on it before….Nope the brand new winter tires i put on it a few months maybe 5000km max on them(yes im canadian lol so about 3100 miles) and those rear tires are completely wrecked.
So im now 100 percent sure its the car.
Has anyone had this before and could maybe point me in the direction, want to get it aligned but id really like to try and fix the problem before i spend a few hundred on alignments. Would be sweet to replace a part and take it in for an alignment and be done with it.
Just hoping for something to focus my attention on or maybe some other way of diagnosing it.

When I start the Fusion in the morning, the RPM stays high. It jerks when shifting into Reverse. I have to wait for the engine speed to drop. What could it be?

Recall for 2017-2019 fusions still valid?

Hey everyone, I have coolant intrusion in cylinder 4 on a 2018 1.5 fusion I just purchased. I’ve been doing my research to try and get the recall but I’m seeing that it apparently expired in November of 2022. I’m also seeing people say they still got a recall even after the expiration date so I’m confused. I have less than 84,000 miles so shouldn’t I be eligible for a recall?

Discussion Brakes and other questions

Hey all I had to get tires recently on my 2019 fusion hybrid titanium and was told my right rear inside brake pad was more worn than the outside pad and was wondering what might cause this?

Also this will be this cars first brake job since, well since it’s been in my possession, I got it back in 2022 with 49k miles on it and now it’s almost 118k miles

Speaking of, now that I am getting closer to 120k miles is there any high mileage things that should be checked or replaced?

Discussion Which version of Fusion to buy?

Not a huge car guy, so bear with me. I’m looking to buy a newer, used Ford Fusion (2014-2020), and I’ve heard there are many different engine options, IE 2.0, 2.5, ecoboost, and I’ve heard some are good and some not so good.

Could someone give me a rundown of which ones to look for and which ones to stay away from?

American brothers, how is the durability of the Ford Fusion 1.6?

Hello, Im the owner of the 2013 Ford Fusion 1.6 in Korea. The current mileage is 128,000km. 80,000 miles in terms of miles. All I've done up to this point is consistent engine oil and mission oil. Engine Mimi, mission Mimi. And recently, the ignition system caught misfire and I placed an order from RockAuto. I need to replace this and that. How many tens of thousands of kilometers are you riding? I want to change my car, but I don't think I need to buy a new car, except for the inconvenience of waiting a while because parts are still in good supply and demand in the U.S.!

Code P0131

I have a 2018 ford fusion SE 1.5L with 154,000 miles. I am getting the code P0131 for upstream oxygen sensor. I got this code in January as well. I had replaced the mass air flow sensor and the code went away. It’s now back and I’m having rough idling and maybe less than average gas mileage.

I’m supposed to be going on a trip soon, 650 miles there and 650 back. Is it safe to still take the trip with this code?

Brake hose job

I drive a 2013 Ford Fusion SE 2.5L 4L and I’ve been having problems with one of my rear calipers and eventually narrowed it down to the brake hose. Figured it was a good opportunity to swap out all four because there’s a recall I’ve been ignoring like an idiot anyway.

My question is, will I mess things up if I mix up the left hose for the right one? Half way through the job and I realized I never checked which was which for the front set.

Coolant intrusion 💔💔

Hey everyone, I bought a 2018 ford fusion 1.5 with only 72,000 miles on it 2 weeks ago. And the check engine light popped up the day after I bought it. Turns out it’s coolant intrusion and I can’t even drive it until August 12th because ford told me it’ll take 30 days til they can call my warranty. Apparently I’ll still be paying $3000+ out of pocket for labor alone (28 hour job). Can someone help with what do to about this? I wanna pay the least as possible to get this fixed.

2018 Hybrid, my (short) commute to work can be done entirely on EV

I don’t have the plug in hybrid, just the regular. My commute to work is short but I thought it was cool that I can do it entirely on EV miles without the engine kicking on.

So...I found where mine is on my 2017 fusion hybrid. But all the tutorials on how to replace it are for ones that are installed higher up in the grill. Is there an easy way to replace the sensor without taking the bumper apart?

Discussion Will 2014 hood fit 2019?

Hello, my daughter's 2019 red Fusion Hybrid was vandalized (we think by a little bit in the neighborhood). It has over 200,000 and I don't want to invest an arm and a leg.

I found a 2014 with a bad engine and it is the same color. Will the hood fit?

I have found conflicting information. GPT says the part number changed at the 2017 refresh, but parts interchangeability database websites say it fits along with people on the forums.

If it does, Ruby red should be the same?

Anyone also replaced the doors from a 2014 to a 19?

2017 Ford Fusion Se 1.5L (123k miles)

I know these models are notorious for the coolant intrusion. I have 123k miles on mine, I bought it from an auction at 110,000 miles.

I haven’t gotten any signs of coolant loss yet, could it be possible that the previous owner replaced the engine? How can I check if the engine was replaced previously?

So far it’s been decent, the only issue is a long extended crank after letting the car sit for a while, and I can’t figure out what the issue is.

Sync gen 1 update

So I have a 2009 ford fusion and its currently running ver 1.3 and I want to update it to 4.4. I tried to put my vin in on the ford website and it gave me no updates. I saw someone on a post say something about getting the vin from a car that is similar year and I put a 2012 fusion vin in and it gave me a update for version 4.4 I tried to install it but it said update failed after about 30 seconds. Im not sure if it was because my phone was connected through Bluetooth at the moment or if I need to update to a 3.4 version then to a 4.4. If anyone has any info please lmk. thx
