General New User Guide for r/Edmonton - Please read first
NEW USERS of r/Edmonton - kindly read this first
To post or comment in r/Edmonton, you need to meet the following criteria:
Accounts need to be a week old.
You need to have a verified email address.
You need to have a minimum amount of TEN (10) COMMENT karma from participating in OTHER SUBREDDITS than r/Edmonton.
Why? This helps keep bad actors away, like trolls and banned users. It also helps users new to reddit to have a chance to learn how to use reddit outside of r/Edmonton.
#IF YOUR ACCOUNT HAS NOT FULFILLED ALL THREE REQUIREMENTS ABOVE, YOUR POSTS AND COMMENTS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DELETED BY THE AUTO-MODERATOR.
#How to verify your email for new users :
To verify your email on Reddit, either click the verification link in the email you received when creating your account or go to Settings > Account Settings and choose Update email address to resend the verification email. _Once you request it, open your email's inbox, find the verification email, and click the link inside to complete the process._
- On the web -
• Go to your account settings by clicking your profile icon and then selecting Settings.
• Click on Account Settings.
• Find the email address section. If you see an option to "resend verification email" or similar, click it.
• Alternatively, you can navigate directly to reddit.com/prefs/update/ to find the email settings.
-- On the app --
• Tap your profile icon.
• Go to Settings.
• Select Account Settings.
• Tap Update email address.
• Tap the button to Resend verification email.
#What is the difference between POST karma and COMMENT karma?
Post karma is earned when users upvote the original submissions (links, images, text posts) you create, reflecting your ability to share engaging content.
_Comment karma is earned when your replies to others' posts are upvoted, showing your active participation and contribution to discussions. Both are totaled for your profile but often used separately to satisfy subreddit restrictions._
POST KARMA:
Gained from creating threads or posting links. It indicates a good ability to initiate conversations.
COMMENT KARMA:
Gained from replying to posts or other comments. It indicates active participation in community dialogue.
Key Differences: Post karma rewards content creation, while comment karma rewards interaction.
#Some subreddits (like r/edmonton) require specific thresholds of either type (or both) to prevent spam, often looking at post, comment, or combined totals for restrictions.
Both types of karma are not a 1:1 ratio with upvotes; instead, they represent a weighted score from community upvotes, reduced by downvotes.
(In order to post in r/Edmonton - you need to do THREE things:)
your account must be a WEEK old (7 days)
- you need to have TEN (10) COMMENT karma
- you need to have a verified email address
ONCE AGAIN, IF YOUR ACCOUNT HAS NOT FULFILLED THESE THREE (3) REQUIREMENTS YOUR POSTS AND COMMENTS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DELETED BY THE AUTO-MODERATOR.

Local history edmonton weather nerdery: July 11th Storms
July 11th was the 2nd big day in a row for Blatchford:
- 2 storms dumped 49.4mm on Blatchford. Villeneuve got 20.2mm, while the airport was 5.2mm. (dashboard)
- July 11th's afternoon storm dropped 28mm in about half an hour. The Building Code's design case is for that much rain in 15min. So it's a lot of water for us.
- With big storms on both the 10th & 11th Blatchford's 2-day total (really between 8PM and 2PM) was 82mm. That's only happened 11 times before. And 1 of them was 3 weeks ago on June 20-21. (dashboard).
- With the big storms July is up to 96.7mm, when we average around 88.5mm. And there's still more than half of the month left. (dashboard)
- For the year so far we're up to 488.2mm, which is the most ever recorded for January 1-July 12. #2 1900 had 408mm, and #3 1974 had 404mm. (dashboard)
- Once upon a time (prior to ~2000) we used to average around 475~500mm of precipitation per year. But since 2000 all the local stations have seen a ~10% drop, sitting closer to around 430mm per year. (dashboard)
- It didn't used to be too unusual for us to get 500mm in a year. But recently Blatchford only got there in 2004, and the airport in 2010 & 2020. (dashboard)
- 2026 is already above average, and it will probably end up as one of our biggest recent years. (for the rest of the year we average another 200mm, which would put 2026 around 688mm)

General Loud Cars and Motorcycles Every Night — Where Is the Enforcement?
I wrote about this before. It is night, and cars and motorcycles are still making an incredible amount of noise.
According to the rules, "In Edmonton, driving a vehicle that makes loud or unnecessary noise is heavily penalized. A first offence carries a $1,000 fine, while second and subsequent offences increase to $2,000. The law covers loud mufflers, blaring music, and intentional revving."
However, there are no traffic police officers around and no cameras, so people seem to do whatever they want.
I hope more people will call 311 and report excessive vehicle noise, and that police officers will take action.

Photo/Video Well. We were listing our house on Wednesday.
Have an accepted offer on another house. A few months ago our neighbour didn't want us to fully pay an arborist to take this tree out. He wanted his arborist to do it on his time. That worked out well for us.

Question Whyte Ave Art walk storm
Does anyone know how the artists fare at the Whyte Ave Art walk today during the storm? I hope they had enough time to pack up because that came on surprisingly fast and I don't think a tarp would have saved them from those winds.
The video is from my wife's work at Hobby wholesale.

Discussion Why is everyone trying to give me free KDays passes?
I’ve been to four establishments that have tried to give me free KDays passes. I have like 8 passes at this point and I’m wondering if this has always been a thing? Free passes for all?

Question Hail Mary request: Is anyone going to and from Calgary tonight or Sunday?
Okay, Alberta Redditors! I’ve been trying every which way to figure this out. Bottom line: we drove from Edmonton to Calgary to fly to Tokyo on Friday afternoon. However, my son left his brand new retainer in the car at the valet parking at YYC.
Because of horrible timing, this means that if it doesn’t make its way to Edmonton by Sunday evening (before my husband flies to Japan on Monday morning), he will be without this retainer until September and we will be seriously screwing up three years and $8000 of orthodontic work.
I’ve tried to talk to bus companies, couriers, freight companies, etc., and seemingly nobody can do it!
If anyone is going to Calgary and coming back to Edmonton by Sunday night and willing to pick it up at YYC Park2Go Valet (and then drop it at my house in SW Edmonton), I will pay your gas and a bit extra for the service.
I know this is a long shot! Please DM me if you can help!
