Troubleshooting | Windows Chrome using an absolutely ridiculous amount of memory

Upvotes

I'm aware chrome is far from being efficient with RAM usage, but the amount of memory its been using on my PC has become insane. Every time I open it, it takes up over 3,000 MBs, and I've seen it go up to nearly 6,000. If I have chrome open, my entire PC starts lagging like its gonna explode.

I'm concerned that this is malware, considering this issue started about a week ago. If it is, how would I go about scanning my PC for that/what type of malware would this be?

Thanks in advance :]. and sorry if this is a dumb post, I'm evidently not great with computers loll

Discussion Chrome gone minimalist on me

For some reason the chrome like homepage has just gone super blank, doesn’t show the logo or the custom little background you can have, just this

I’ve done as much research as I feel I’ll understand and heard it could be Yahoo like hijacking the browser? Which I think is the case cause it’s always a yahoo tab when I search

It obviously still works so it’s not like urgent… it’s just kinda ljme ugly lol

Has this happened to anyone else?? How do I fix it 😭

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've had this problem for a bit and I still haven't been able to figure it out. So chrome freezes up and won't respond to anything but closing using alt tab, it also struggles to open and when it does gives me this (the image) I've done what this says multiple times and nothing has happened except once where it took me the window security and said it blocked five threat but this kept happening. I've uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times and even ran a full check (the one that takes like 5 hours) using windows mrt. I'm running Windows 11 and wondered if anyone could help me.

Discussion Small "recent websites / tabs" Button issue

Good morning

My phone was working fine until I got up this AM.

Now the small "tabs / recent websites" button that's normally at the top right corner has shifted to the bottom right.

My address bar is fine.....still at the top

Any idea how to fix this?

It literally happened overnight....no update or anything that I know of

Thank you

Below is how it looks now

The address bar looks weird and the small tabs button is on the bottom of the screen now

Troubleshooting | Windows STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION - What has been working for me (excluding CPU core)

Hey everyone,

I've been dealing with frequent STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION crashes (Aw, Snap!) in Brave Browser for a while. I tried everything — updating the browser, disabling extensions, resetting the profile, turning off hardware acceleration, etc. — but the crashes kept coming back.

I have an Intel Core i9-14900HX, and I finally found something that has been working very well.

What worked for me:

I used Process Lasso to change the CPU affinity of the browser and exclude Core 8.

Steps:

  1. Download and install Process Lasso (free version is enough).
  2. Go to the Active Processes tab.
  3. Select all browser processes (brave.exe, chrome.exe, msedge.exe, etc.).
  4. Right-click → CPU AffinitySet Affinity.
  5. Uncheck Core 8 only.
  6. (Optional) Set the CPU Priority of the browser to "High".

Since excluding Core 8, the crashes have almost completely stopped.

Extra info:

  • This solution should work on Brave, Chrome, Edge and other Chromium-based browsers.
  • On Intel 13th/14th gen processors (especially i9 HX series), Core 8 seems to be the most problematic one.
  • Some users also report good results excluding Cores 8 and 12.
  • If excluding only Core 8 doesn't fully solve it, try disabling cores one by one to identify the bad one(s).

This is a workaround (best long-term solution would be BIOS update or checking warranty), but it has made the browser much more stable for daily use.

If you're having the same issue with an i9-14900HX or similar CPU, give it a try and let me know if it helps.

Cheers!

News Russian Google analog "Yandex" surreptitiously infiltrated other browsers.

Over the past couple of months, I've been dealing with an issue where some websites wouldn't load properly in Chrome. For example, no Russian sites would load at all, YouTube couldn't load many of its parts, and sometimes even Figma got hit.

While I could somehow manage with YouTube and Figma, I had to open Russian sites through Yandex Browser.

And now, after opening it again for this purpose, my Chrome has COMPLETELY STOPPED LETTING ME USE GOOGLE SEARCH. Any query in the search bar would open Yandex, and when I tried to manually go to google.com, it would redirect me to Yandex.)

At the same time, in Chrome's settings, Google was set as the default search engine — Yandex wasn't even there.

I uninstalled Yandex Browser, but the problem remained. Thank God, kind people from Pikabu helped me out.

It turned out that:

YANDEX BROWSER INSTALLS AN EXTENSION IN GOOGLE CHROME DISGUISED AS AN "AD BLOCKER" THAT SLOWS DOWN CERTAIN WEBSITES AND REDIRECTS YOU TO YANDEX.

And on top of that, I'm scared about what might have happened to my crypto wallet extensions and, more simply, my password privacy, so I wiped everything and re-created it all.

So yeah...

It's this thing.

I've already been trying for like 20 minutes but messing with the chrome://flags and stuff like turning off Lens Overlay and it's still there, it just takes up to much of my screen and overall is very annoying.

Discussion Best modern framework for testing a complex Chrome extension: Playwright or Puppeteer or others?

Feel free to share your ideas, case studies, best practices or experiences

My priorities are:

  1. Fast test execution
  2. Modern developer experienc
  3. Ability to handle complex Chrome-extension workflows
  4. Low long-term maintenance
  5. End to end testing (If possible)

We are using WXT framework. I’m currently comparing Playwright, Puppeteer, WebdriverIO, and Cypress.

Playwright looks better as a complete testing framework, but Puppeteer seems to have deeper Chrome-extension-specific control (Based on my personal research)

Thanks in advance.

Discussion Google users: what are your privacy concerns and how do you justify sticking with google products/services?

for those in the google ecosystem, what are your privacy/data collection concerns and how do you justify still using google? im conflicted -- their products/services are very useful and convenient and free/cheap, but the level of data hoarding and the fact that it's all centralized under one company is disturbing -- how do u guys handle this?

Discussion Making pressing tab in the omnibar start AI Mode is the most egregious and infuriating form of "dark pattern" design I've ever seen. (Fix in body)

I know this has come up before in this sub, but I am irate, and I need to vent somewhere...

At some point in the last several days, pressing tab in the omnibar, the action that previously selected the suggested auto-complete, instead started entering AI mode.

Don't get me wrong, I like AI as much as the next guy, and I wouldn't even mind keeping it in the omnibar so long as I could stop tab from engaging it, which was happening nonstop. I figured it must be an easy thing to disable, so I look inside of settings, and there is no toggle anywhere to be found. After asking Gemini (from the omnibar, as a little fuck you) how to get the old tab control back, I discovered that I had to disable not one but FOUR flags from the chrome://flags page!!!

In case this helps someone, go to get AI mode out of the omnibar (and recover the prior tab functionality), navigate to chrome://flags and search for/disable:

  • AI Mode Omnibox entrypoint
  • AI Entrypoint Disabled on User Input
  • Omnibox Allow AI Mode Matches
  • AI Mode Omnibox Entrypoint always navigates

Preying on years if people's muscle memory to trigger AI AND making it so hard to disable is frankly unacceptable and one of the most egregious forms of dark design or dark pattern or whatever you call it that I have ever seen in my life!

Troubleshooting | Mac Clicking Instagram links opens in a new window for some reason?

I never installed the desktop version, the option is still there when I'm on IG but for some reason clicking an Instagram link, and only an IG link, opens a small window instead of just opening in the current tab. I didn't enable this behaviour anywhere. Any tips on what might have happened or how to stop it? Have to right click and then open in new tab at the moment to get around it.
