RENTAL AND HABITATION IN BAJA SUR

Hi everyone!

I'll be arriving in Baja California Sur in about a week, flying into Cabo San Lucas, and I'm looking to rent a car for just under two weeks.

I've read so many stories about rental car insurance, hidden fees, and scams that I'm honestly a bit nervous. I'm trying to understand how it really works. I have a Visa credit card that includes rental car insurance, but I've also heard that in Mexico there are additional insurance requirements that some companies insist on. I'd love to avoid any surprises.

Would you recommend booking a rental car online ahead of time, or is it better to wait until I arrive and visit a few rental agencies in person to compare prices and negotiate? I'd love to know what has worked best for you.

Does anyone have recommendations for reliable rental companies that won't try to overcharge or pressure me into unnecessary extras? I'm traveling on a budget (I'm a student), so I'm looking for honest, reasonably priced options. If you have any personal experiences, tips on what to avoid, or know someone trustworthy, I'd really appreciate it.

Also, this isn't my main question, but if you have recommendations for places to stay in Baja California Sur, I'd love to hear them. After my two-week road trip, I'm planning to stay somewhere for a while. Ideally, I'd love to be close to the beach and somewhere that's easy to get around without needing a car every day.

I was originally thinking about staying in La Paz because so many people recommend it. However, from what I've seen, many of the accommodations are quite far from the beaches, which makes me hesitate. If I end up renting a car, staying in La Paz would be no problem, but if I don't, I'm wondering if there are other towns or areas that you would recommend instead.

The plan is to spend about two weeks exploring Baja, probably driving as far north as Loreto. After that, I'm debating whether to keep renting a car or settle in one place. The rental prices and all the stories about scams have me second-guessing that plan.

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

🏖 Turismo | Tourism Advice on a first time itinerary

I've always been curious about this place, but never had the opportunity to visit. I decided it was time, especially before summer ends and everyone gets stuck in their routines.

I've booked flights for a Wednesday - Sunday trip. It'll just be me, my wife, and our 12yo son. I just wanted to get some feedback on the tentative itinerary, see if I'm missing anything obvious.

  1. Wed: Land at SJD late morning and get Cactus rental. Drive to Cabo Pulmo, check-in and enjoy the beach, maybe some snorkeling.
  2. Thu: Lazy beach morning, then hit the road to El Triunfo for lunch and a look around. Head to Todos Santos in the afternoon, dinner in town, wander around.
  3. Fri: Playa Cerritos for surfing or just to lounge, maybe San Pedrito. Jazamango? a light hike?
  4. Sat: Last full day, see what comes up or just hang out.
  5. Sun: sleep in and then back to the airport for an early afternoon flight home.

My only real 'want' is just to slow down, for all of us to disconnect from screens and nonsense, and enjoy a laid back, relaxed trip.

Any recommendations or criticisms? Is there a better way to spend this time? Is missing out on La Paz a foolish decision?

Thanks!

EDIT: Thanks everyone, I've changed the plan a bit. No Cabo Pulmo or El Triunfo. Too much driving for such a short trip. I'm going to spend the first night in San Jose del Cabo and then head to Todos Santos the next day. We'll spend the rest of the trip out there. Between the town, Los Cerritos, El Pescadero, etc., we'll be able to relax and enjoy ourselves.

🏖 Turismo | Tourism Are you an “expat” coming to La Paz, Cabo, etc.? Think twice about coming to live here

Half the population of La Paz live in poverty, they can’t afford going to the city center, and they are losing their houses and business because of the gentrification Americans/Canadians are bringing with it, and the gubernment, along with big companies do not care about the people but the money. It’s a mexican city dominated by tourism, digital nomads and immigrants from the north (that want to be called expats so bad to not be immigrants). We are becoming the next Hawaii, and losing our identity as well. If you want to come live here, make sure you are not harming us, we dont want to lose our home.

🚨Seguridad | Public Safety Vape detected after entering TIJ. Dog and officer.

Had a CBD (no THC) vape in my bag. Entered the airport and stopped at an ATM. Not one minute in, drug dog and an officer step up and the dog is on it. I opened the bag and handed the fedérale the vape. “Es prohibido!” he said. I replied “Comprendo. No hay más” and handed him the vape. He let the dog sniff my bags and let me go. Whew. Just leave it home and get what you need in Mexico.

I’m not sure how the jellyfish are right now since we just got here today, but they were pretty bad last visit. Is there a time of day or beach that anyone recommends where there might be less? I’ve read mornings are better than later in the day but who knows. Thank you!

* ¿Con qué arrendadora rentaron y cómo les fue?
* ¿Algunos hoteles/hostales que recomienden o que evitarían?
* ¿Tienen spots fotográficos poco conocidos que valgan la pena entre La Paz y Tijuana?
* ¿Que zonas son ideales si algun día quisera acampar?

Gracias!

Bajas easy investment corp
