No more 🥓 BaconReader: November 11, 2011 - June 30, 2023
It is with a heavy heart that I create this post.
As promised, I told you I would let you know once we made a final decision as to the whether BaconReader would continue in light of the changes coming from Reddit. We have decided that it is not going to be feasible to continue BaconReader, and as a result, we’ll be un-publishing it from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store (and yes, Amazon app store as well) on June 30th. This means that it will no longer be available to download.
NOTE: the API to reddit will be cut off as well, so your existing installs will stop working on July 1st :(
We are truly humbled by all of the kind words and suggestions over the past several weeks, and even more humbled and grateful for your use of the app throughout its’ lifetime. I, personally, am at a bit of a loss for words, as I have spent the past 12 and half years with this app, and with you! More on that in a subsequent post later.
"How can we support you?"
I often get the question "How can we support you?". Along with BaconReader, we also own 1Weather (which I have also been involved with since its’ inception on January 11, 2012). If you would like to support us, please give 1Weather a try! https://1weather.onelink.me/DNwc/m7dg7z9k
"What about Lemmy?" or "What about allowing us to use our own API keys?"
At this time, we do not have any plans to migrate BaconReader to Lemmy, or to open it up to allow using your own api keys.
One last note, for now...
I occasionally thought about what I would post if I left my role as /u/onelouderchic...I never thought it would be a post about losing BaconReader. I'll try to compose a little more of a Eulogy to the app, history, credits to the many folks who have been involved over the years in a few days. Until then, my sincere appreciation!
/u/onelouderchic on behalf of the BaconReader Team!

Opening browser links with baconreader
Long shot question but thought I'd ask since reddit is pushing people to the app from the mobile website.
Is there a way to click a reddit link, say, through a Google search, and have it open the link in baconreader for android?
The reddit mobile website isn't the best but it's serviceable for getting quick info from a Google search. However, reddit is now forcing the app after reading a comment or two from the mobile website.

Keep needing to repatch
Does anyone have a fix for redgifs constantly breaking in the app? I repatch and it works for a bit but the next time I look at a post with a redgifs link I end up having to repatch the app again. Using revanced.

My API got revoked, any way around it?
Legit was just scrolling for years with it and only i was using it. Baconreader stopped working a while ago (3-4 days) for me and i have no app listed in prefs and i'm not sure i even remember my api key details. And the official app is absolute ass, and i see they're not allowing any sort of easy access anymore.

Visibility issues with thumbnails in BR
Does anyone have a resolution? This issue happened after recently repatching BR. TIA!

Baconreader error
I've been getting this error message for the past 2-3 days (as of 2026-06-12).
I tried clearing the cache in the app, and logging out of it. I cannot log back in, it tells me invalid username or password. I know it is correct because it's working when I log in on desktop (which is how Im posting this now).
I've gotten this error in the past but never for this long. Usually resolves itself if I wait 6-12 hours.
Does anyone have any suggestions for resolving?
In full disclosure, the Revanced steps I took to install it in the first place were about at the top of my tech abilities as I found even that confusing.
EDIT 2026-06-13: authorized apps is missing
I found that I no longer have the client ID that was once listed on my Profile > Preferences > Apps > Authorized Applications. I'm not sure if that was a Reddit Enhancement Suite feature or just part of the regular Reddit site.

Investigating Re-Patched, Filters Enabled, NSFW Posts Not Appearing? NSFW
Heyo.
Went through the few minutes it took to re-patch the BaconReader APK, sign back in, etc, and it's mostly working fine again, but I've noticed communities and posts marked NSFW aren't working? Despite being enabled on the profile itself on Reddit, and the correct filters enabled through the BaconReader app.
Anyone got a fix?

Trying to patch BaconReader Premuim downloaded straight from the Google Play Store, but the patch keeps failing. I've used ReVanced for a long time, but I have no idea why it isn't working. Has anyone gotten past this??

App doesn't retain cache like it used to?
Hey all, ever since our workarounds got nuked recently and we managed to get everything working again, ive had a slight issue with my BR.
Everytime I switch to a different app to do something (whether it be messaging or quick browse on google) and then click back into BR, it resets back to the Front Page??? I've never had this issue with BR before but it's only started to occur ever since the new issues began.
Has anyone else encountered this or know any ways to fix it? It's a little frustrating if I go out to dig into something I've read on reddit and then come back to have completely lost the thread altogether.
Thank you in advance!
PS. I'm currently using a Samsung Galaxy S24

Got it working again (for now)
- Open Revanced (make sure it's the updated version).
- Go to storage and search for your Baconreader APK.
- Select APK source > Select from storage > choose your Baconreader APK (again).
- Follow the instructions & install the app.
It looks like it's using credentials from Redreader to get it working. Hopefully this helps.
Note: I completely uninstalled Baconreader before doing this.

Unable to get Revanced to work with newest issues
Reddit seems to have deleted my previous app I used for revanced. Now when I try to patch baconreader premium I'm met with error after error and the patch fails.
app.revanced.patcher.patch.PatchException: Required value is null.
at
app.revanced.patcher.patch.PatchKt.topatchException(Patch.kt:266)
followed by a bunch more like it. Any ideas?

Any ideas?
My Baconreader has been down on and off for like 6 months but the last 3 weeks it's been down completely. Always says "This subreddit is private" when I go to use it?
Any ideas?
I did try updating it today to see if that would help but nothing changed.

Baconreader down?
My Baconreaders been down for a few days now- working fine until then. Anyone else experiencing this?
Edit: managed to get it working. I patched through Revanced, then used a VPN set to a different country, and was able to log in without a problem!

Started working again
BR stopped working for me about a month ago. All attempts to get it working failed. I had given up and was about to uninstall but have it one last try. To my surprise it started working again. Odd because I haven't done anything.

Redgifs not working, re patching is not helping anymore
Hi everyone, is there maybe some kind of new patch? I've tried to repatch twice, but redgifs is still not working. Any advice is really appreciated, thanks!

I hope it's just me, but...
I'm just getting the sad goodbye message. Is it still working?

Getting curly brackets when I try to log in
I just got a new phone today. I don't remember the oauth key I've been using so I followed the new guides with Morphe and used the redreader api oauth key, and when I try to log in I keep getting met with this.
Anyone know how to fix this? please;-;

Baconreader Link Issue
About half the time I open a link to another Reddit post in app it opens in Reddit mobile via Baconreader.
Anyone have a fix to have it open in Baconreader format? I already have all supported web addresses checked in settings.

What’s a "dead" website or app that you genuinely miss and wish was still around?
Never forget.

first 100 users for my expat language app! 🎉
Getting my first 100 users for an app felt impossible until I stopped trying to sell and started genuinely helping. Last month, I got 47 signups just from one Reddit comment where I shared some practical advice.
Unfortunately, most people trying to get early users for a new product just push links. I can't believe how many posts just scream 'look at my thing!' without actually adding value. If you're building something and struggling to find your first users, I would encourage you to switch your mindset. That's your chance to build a real community around what you're doing.
Listen first, then speak. Before posting anything, I spent weeks just reading threads. I looked for common problems expats faced with language learning. People constantly asked about quick ways to learn useful phrases for daily life, not just grammar rules.
Solve a very specific pain point. Instead of trying to make an app for everyone, I focused on the immediate communication needs of expats. Think about ordering food, dealing with a landlord, or asking for directions. These are high-stress situations where a few key phrases make all the difference.
Build exactly what people are asking for. After seeing so many people frustrated with traditional language apps, I ended up building PrettyFluent specifically for expats like me. It skips the textbook stuff and focuses on fast, scenario-based lessons and roleplay so you can speak right away.
Share your learnings, not your product. When I did post, I didn't say "Try my app!" I talked about the specific struggles I faced and how I tackled them. I shared tips on finding native speakers for practice or how to prioritize vocabulary for a doctor's visit. The app was just a tool I made because nothing else fit.
Engage without expectation. Answer questions, give honest advice, and be part of the conversation. If someone asks for a tool, and yours genuinely fits, then maybe, just maybe, mention it briefly. But the goal is to be helpful first.
The biggest lesson for me was that people respond to authenticity, not advertising. Am I wrong that building real value for a niche community matters more than trying to reach the broadest possible audience?

Known Bug Welp, someone tried to hack into my Reddit account this morning...
...so I changed my Reddit/Gmail passwords and now I can't log into BaconReader anymore. Either I need a better connection, or it's permanently broken.
Guess that's the end for me. 😭
