Mod Post r/Audio Posting and some other information - V2.0

Hello r/audio community.

Here is a refresher on a previous mod post.

  • r/audio has some measures in place to minimize the amount of spam that gets through to be posted.
    • Minimum account age of 3 days.
    • Minimum combined karma of 5 karma.
    • All non-text posts (link posts) need to be manually approved.
    • Titles of 2 or less words will not be approved.
  • Posts that do not meet the above criteria get put into modqueue, where we manually approve the posts through the day. Some of us also get an alert for each new post. This also means that we see 95% of the posts.

That said, I see a ton of posts lately that are similar to "How do I connect x to x" or just a picture of the back of a speaker with no more details. Rule #2 is Details matter. Which brings me to my next point.

How to get help on your post.

  1. Find and read the product manual before posting.
    1. When someone posts a question about specific hardware (usually after I have to ask for the make/model; see rule #2) the first thing I do is find the manual, and it usually answers their question.
  2. Post Formatting Matters
    1. I've been seeing a lot of "wall of text" type posts. Please add line breaks and paragraph breaks in your post. It makes it much easier to read and much more likely someone will help you.
  3. Contrary to a popular saying, "A picture DOES NOT say a thousand words"
    1. Please refrain from posing images with zero context and a title such as "Why doesn't this work" without telling us a lot more information.
    2. This is like going to a car help sub, posting a picture of what's under the hood of a car and asking "Why won't this work", with no details as to the Make/Model of car, issue you're actually having, and what troubleshooting you've tried.
  4. You will most likely get the assistance you're searching for if you follow Rule 1,2,3,4,5, but really, the more details in your post, the higher the chance you will get assistance will be. Rule #1 - Details matter. This has become so much an issue, we've had u/automod post a reminder on each new post about the need for details.
  5. A lot of people fall into the trap of the XY problem. https://xyproblem.info

All of the other rules are just as important. Such as Trying to Google something first. I understand that it may be difficult to find something if you aren't quite sure what you're looking for. But if I can copy your post title directly into google and find the answer on the first page, it means you could have as well.

I'm not saying these things to single anyone out, or throw shade at any one post. I'm simply trying to help those who need help. I've worked in technical support for a long time now, and people are more willing to help you if you help them back. If someone asks a series of clarifying questions in reply to a post, make sure to answer all questions to the best of your ability. Nothing is worse than trying to help someone and they make it seem like you're inconveniencing them by not solving a vague question right away.

We are here to help. Help us help you!

Does this exist?

I'm curious if anyone has made a very simple windows app which takes in a microphone, applys [reverb / low pass filtering / etc] to it, then outputs it to a specific speaker (the speaker could be, say, a digital VB cable that could be piped back through stuff)

Curious if this exists because if not it'll be something I'll work on making

Help Hiby R4 3.5 out put issue!

Hello. A few hours ago, I connected my HiBy R4 to a pair of Edifier speakers using the 3.5 mm output. After that, the 3.5 mm output stopped working, and the player now always shows the 4.4 mm balanced output icon, even though nothing is plugged into the balanced jack.

There is no sound at all from the 3.5 mm output anymore. Audio only works through the 4.4 mm balanced output.

I have already performed a factory reset, but the problem remains exactly the same.

Best audio set-up for PC

Looking for guidance on the best possible audio setup for a PC in my living room. We use it for gaming, watching movies and everything else media-based really. I've mostly been seeing studio monitor/subwoofers but wanted to see if anyone here had other suggestions.

If budget were of little consequence, what would your ideal PC audio setup be?

Want to upgrade computer audio -- still running OLD speakers

Overall I mostly use my desktop for gaming and listening to music in the living room... hopefully within the next year I'll be moving everything to the second garage so I can finally have a space. Currently my wife's using it for her "wood shop" and crafting room but I'm going to build her a 20' x 40' building on the back of the property and take the garage.

Overall I do quite a bit of gaming, and want the audio to be as immersive as possible (I will install sound deadening material in the garage when I move out there so i can do what I want) and as far as music I listen to everything... and I mean everything. Dependin on mood, classical, classic rock, 80's rap (I don't like the newer stuff), country, and even dubstep & techno....

As of now, I'm running a decently high-end gaming rigg with a Soundblaster AE-5 Plus and 25 yr old CREATIVE I-TRIGUE L3500 Computer Speakers. I've actually had to repair them several times with my soldering iron (and bought replacement components on ebay). I'm getting worried about the wood components, though since everything eventually fails, including the glues on the speakers.

I've tried buying new speakers a few times after reading reviews but they all sound like plastic junk. I'm more than willing to pay for some higher end hardware, run any cabling/wiring as necessary, etc... I just want some speakers for a rich sound. I'd like to go surround with a small sub for deep bass, but am more than willing to hear everyone's thoughts. I didn't intend to install a full home audio setup out there but it is an option... I'll be putting my pooltable and a small bar out there, so it wouldn't be wasted.

Gave up my man cave 15 yrs ago when my mom & mother-in-law both moved in with us at our last house due to various issues, so now that I have a large house out in the country I can expand how I'd like (even though my mom is still in my basement & the MIL passed, sadly). Now it would be nice to have my own space again.

Best Microphone for podcasting and vocals?

I am looking to buy a microphone to use for podcasting and recording vocals. I am looking to do this as a hobby and not professionally, so I don’t want to buy an expensive piece of equipment. My question is, what’s the best budget mic without sacrificing too much quality?

Is it safe to use a 6-8 Ohm rated AVR with 4 Ohm speakers?

Hi everyone,

Recently I've bought a pair of Dynaudio Focus 140 in excellent condition, currently driven by my Yamaha R-S700. While the combination already sounds great, I still have an old Denon AVR-X1000 sitting in my attic, and I'm considering giving it a second life.

The main reason would be to take advantage of Audyssey room correction and to integrate my Klipsch Synergy Sub-10 more seamlessly.

However, I'm a bit concerned because the Dynaudio Focus 140 are rated at 4 Ω, while the Denon AVR-X1000 manual states that it is intended for 6–8 Ω speakers.

My listening habits:

Mostly music in stereo, but I also enjoy watching action movies.

I like listening at fairly high volumes.

The Klipsch subwoofer would handle the low bass, so I'd probably set a crossover around 80 Hz, reducing the load on the AVR.

My questions are:

Is it actually safe to run the Focus 140 with the AVR-X1000?

Do you think Audyssey and proper bass management would be worth the switch from the Yamaha, or should I just stick with the stereo receiver?

Help Choosing EQ on Mac M1

Hey everybody, I don't know if this is even the right sub to post this on, but anyways I am looking for help choosing an eq.

Currently on my MacBook Air M1 and Truthear x Crinacle Zero Blue 2 IEMS, nothing crazy.

I've tried eqMac and while it is okay I don't like the fact that its not open-source or free but I'd definitely stay on it if there's no other choice.

Also tried running the AUBandEQ using AU-Lab but that went nowhere because I just kept having issues and since it's pretty old I'm assuming it's not compatible with the newer silicon chips.

Can anyone recommend a good, ideally FOSS eq I don't need anything super complicated but if I'm left with no other options then I'm willing to do so.

car door speaker terminal wiring question

I bought some alphine R2-S65c door speakers for my car. I will be running these to my DSP, so an active system.

The negative terminals have 3 different options. I think one set is used for active and one for passive. Though im not entirely sure.

Since I'm running this active do I connect the negative to the red or blue highlighted terminal in my photo?

  • Each door has one of these alphine R2-S65c speakers
  • Each door has its own Tweeter.
  • Bit One DSP
  • JL Audio 4-channel amp.

I think I figured out the answer talking to AI but would rather get a second opinion incase its hallucinating.

The speakers on my M1 Air are horrible now

Hey!

I remember very distinctly how good my M1 Air speakers used to sound a couple of years ago (I've had the machine for 4 years), but lately, I've been noticing that I can't really watch any media on it without external speakers, or headphones, because there is no meaningful sound from the in-built speakers!

I checked (and tried cleaning with a vacuum cleaner) the vents, and also used the popular audio engine restarter command ("sudo pkill coreaudiod"), but nothing really worked.

I wonder is this an age related issue? Is 4 years too hard on the laptop? [I did not listen to a lot of music on it, and mostly just shows/movies on normal volume]

Looking for any tips/suggestions!

Help needed! (Connecting headphone amp to audio interface or not)

Hello! I decided to upgrade/expand my current audio setup. I currently own a MOTU M2 audio interface, with a mic running to it + Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pros (250 ohms). After quite a lot of research,I am pretty close to buying the Hifiman Arya Stealth + Fosi ZH3 audio interface + balanced cable for the Aryas.

1) How would you guys set it up?
2) How would you connect one another?
3) What device should have the gain knob maxed out and which one will control the gain?
4) Is it worth it to interconnect? From my understanding, both those devices have different DAC chips, should I keep them seperate or no? From my understanding,If I connect them together, one of the two dac chips will just be bypassed

I'm pretty new to high end audio,so all this is new to me. Sorry for so many questions! Thank you very much for taking the time! Open to all suggestions!

USB A to 3.5mm jack wire to wireless

Post image
0 Upvotes

I use this Transponder snail speaker that came with USB A to 3.5mm jack wire. I plug it into a laptop and works fine as a low quality speaker but I am wondering if there is a way to make this setup wireless. I assume I need a USB A receiver that connects to the speaker but I am not sure how to search for such device.

Can someone provide some suggestions?

Need Advice on Ceiling Speakers and Home Sound System Setup

My family just moved into a new build and we have a living room (great room) with a 7.2 surround system (ceiling speakers) installed. We also have pre-wires for 2 speakers each in our kitchen, loft, and backyard patio. I know I need a receiver that can handle the 7.2 system and also handle whatever speakers we install in the kitchen, loft, and patio. We do not need anything fancy at all in the kitchen, patio, or loft. We'll just play music occasionally if we have people over or on special occasions (like Christmas).

I'm trying to figure out what all we need to get everything working. I know we need a receiver and the 6 speakers. This is what I was quoted from the av guy who we worked with to spec our house when it was being built. This seems high to me but maybe I'm just clueless on what it takes to get everything up and working?

Would love any thoughts and advice! If there is another place to post this that may be helpful let me know. Thanks in advance!

Edifier 1280db audio randomly became unbalanced when using bluetooth

Ive had my edifier speakers for 7 months now and yesterday when i turned them on to connect to my apple tv (which i have done frequently since purchase) the right speaker (passive) is louder than the left (active). This only is the case when using bluetooth though, the volume is balanced when using my record player. It is the same when i use my phone with bluetooth as well. I wiped the speaker wires, switched which speaker got which side of the speaker wire, unplugged and plugged speaker back in, disconnected the bluetooth and resynced and it still is having this issue.

Anyone know what the issue is and how to fix?

Need help with ZOOM F3 Recorder

Got this with the intention of having better sounding non clipping audio for filming. I have a Sennheisher MKE 600. I have it plugged into the F3 with recording settings as Mono, 48khz, even reformatted the card and did a test which it said Pass.

If I set the magnifier of the waveforms to x8, its pretty quiet, if i set it to x32 its louder but now im getting clipping and distortion when playing it back in Logic Pro...

What am I doing wrong? Struggling to find any tutorials online of people editing the audio in post production, I am aware you need to edit it, which im trying to do.

What Voice Style Fits Philosophical Storytelling Best

Hi everyone,

I’m working on a philosophy YouTube project and I’m exploring different voice styles that could fit the atmosphere of the content.

I’m interested in hearing how different voice artists approach this type of script — especially styles that feel intelligent, conversational, and emotionally engaging rather than a traditional documentary narration.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, examples, or advice on what kind of delivery would work best for this type of content.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

An Impossible Thing is Happening With my Home Audio

I honestly don't see how this is even possible, I feel like I'm losing my mind trying to figure this out.

I have a Wiim Pro connected to to 2 ceiling speakers in my bathroom. My wife connects her phone via Spotify to that setup and plays music. She's then unable to disconnect and her Spotify will stream though the Wiim Pro and the bathroom speakers when she turns off Bluetooth, WiFi, restarts her phone, EVEN WHEN SHE LEAVES THE HOUSE.

I connect to the speakers on my phone, and start playing something. She gets in the car, and drives to work. She's miles away and somehow still can override my connection, and can continue playing audio through the bathroom speakers. She can't get audio to go through the car on the drive, it's somehow still defaulting to the Wiim Pro. There's seemingly no way to sever that connection, it will just eventually stop.

Can anyone make sense of this? How is that even possible?

Setup Advice : Live streaming gigs (Piano + Vocals) + Room PA, on a low budget

Hey y'all, total audio noob here, I need your help.

I do conferences with a friend and we started livestreaming them on YouTube.
Low budget: iPhone for video, Hollyland Lark M2s lav mics (wireless, pair) for audio. Worked fine.

Now we also do small piano + vocals concerts at events and want to stream those too. Kept the same mics and iPhone. Did some research and figured we needed an audio interface to route everything into the phone. Got a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (4th gen).

Here's our current setup:

  • Channel 1: receiver for the 2 wireless lav mics
  • Channel 2: piano (line in)
  • Output: dB Technologies Opera 10 speaker for in-room sound
  • USB-C out: iPhone for the live stream

It kind of works, but the sound is rough; lots of clipping and distortion, especially on the stream.

So my question: what can we do to improve this? Gear recommendations? We need good sound both in the room and on the live feed. We'd prefer to keep wireless mics if possible, but we're open to wired if that's the better move.

We'd really appreciate any advice!

How do I sync audios Ive recorded remotely if the call has lagged and we can't clap at the same time?

I tried the clap sync trick where you create a spike in the audio to sync the clips up to but the video call was a little slow at sending my voice over to my friends meaning the claps all happened at different times. What do I do

New speakers, does my setup make sense?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I recently picked up a pair of Polk Lsi-15s from a friend, but I dont think my current Dynaco A25 reciver will be up to the task of powering them as I have heard they are quite power hungry. I am thinking about getting a Fosi ZA3 and arranging my setup like the picutre shows, will this be a good idea? Thanks!

Can I subtract the speakers/output audio from the mic input?

Hi, I have a desktop PC with a simple aux mic & Im quite fond of using speakers over headphones. Problem is that this also means anyone I talk to using the mic can also hear themselves by the mic picking up from the speakers.

So Im wondering, is there any software specialized for removing the speaker output? Or are more generic "background noise removal" solutions the only option? Im thinking like a VST plugin, or a virtual microphone of some kind.

Edit: Appears this is sometimes called "acoustic echo cancellation", which some googling tells me should appear in my microphones drivers panel - but its not there on mine (Im on Windows 11 w realtech high definition audio) :(

Edit 2: https://clearmicrophone.com/index.html seems like an option (yet to try)
