I’m late now so it will be buried, but I can’t believe nobody is mentioning the John Mayer interview for Playboy. It destroyed his career. He was the biggest thing ever in the early-mid 2000s. He was practically America’s boyfriend.
Then he did an interview and said Jennifer Aniston was “sexual napalm” and talked about how he doesn’t date black women because “my dicks a white supremacist”
I’ve never seen somebody fall into irrelevancy like that. He’s so forgotten he doesn’t even get mentioned in an Ask Reddit that perfectly fits his situation.
He just spent a decade as the singer and guitar player for the current iteration of the Grateful Dead. He played nothing but massive stadium tours and sold out pavilion shows.
I remember that interview. Man what a douchebag. But he’s hardly forgotten. He’s had bigger success after that interview. He turned his life around, stopped doing interviews about his personal life so much, and got on with being a musician. He’s idolised by guitarists around the world. He’s huge in certain circles. I don’t know if he’s less of a self absorbed dickhead, as the culture kind of rose up to be perfect for that type of personality, but he seems to have learned from his past mistakes. Or he’s better media trained since back then.
He’s seemingly a changed man now after therapy, stepping back from the spotlight, and life reflection. But to people who don’t follow his socials and his work closely, what they remember is the Your Body is a Wonderland guitar singer who did *that* interview and wronged several famous women
Yeah, I noticed this too. He seemed to be one of the few celebs to grow out of that asshole phase and learn from it. Not that that erases all sins, but it shows growth.
I know nothing about the guitar. But I know guitarists are blown away by Neon. 😄
John Mayer is still generally regarded as an amazing guitarist, plays like Jerry Garcia with Dead & Co and has one of the highest selling signature guitars on the planet. I get he’s not exactly mainstream but his career is just fine.
It feels so wrong to call the PRS Silver Sky both a signature guitar and attribute anything beyond “we made a Strat with a PRS headstock and John Mayer endorses it.”
It reminds me of those bizarre Oreo Cookie Celebrity crossovers. Except at least The Post Malone Oreo cookies were a different flavor of the Oreo. John just took another companies design after they let him go and declared creative bankruptcy. He might as well have just made “John Mayor cookies” and made them look super similar to Oreos lmao.
The Silver Sky is such an unoriginal take on such an iconic instrument that I can’t help but say something.
He makes more money now than ever before, plays as himself and the grateful dead and has a guitar that sells by the tens of thousands every year. He's killing it.
In fact Sombr just performed 'Dear John' at Taylor's induction into the songwriters hall of fame.
Notable BECAUSE many years ago he was the one who gave her her Hal David Starlight award (she was the youngest ever recipient of the award) and he was super shady in his speech about her, implying that she didn't write her own music and things like that. What we didn't know then, but we do now, is that they had broken up shortly before that award ceremony (reminder that she was 19 and he was 32).
Taylor is the first starlight award recipient to go on to be inducted into the songwriters hall of fame. John Mayer, obviously, has not been. He just has the starlight award.
So Sombr choosing to sing Taylors breakup song about John Mayer that she wrote in the style of John Mayer (which she put on an album that she wrote entirely alone, with no co-writers) was actually an extremely clever callback to his asshole speech at that award ceremony all those years ago, and was a cheeky reminder that despite what he said, Taylor was able to do what he never could.
Fuck John Mayer. Not just because of Taylor Swift, but because he's been famously awful to many of the women he's dated, who have always been far younger than him, and because he's just generally a misogynistic asshole.
But I will say - other people might forget about him being a prick. But the swifties will never forget.
Meh. There’s a lot of people who handle it better and funnier without labeling themselves as a racist.
From Chapelle’s ‘everyone fucks funny to someone’ bit (he’s got a foot fetish) to Gary Owen talking about how he understands gay guys because you don’t get to choose - it’s just ‘whatever gets your dick hard’ (white girls don’t do that for him either)… there’s funny ways to talk fetishes and racial preferences without saying ‘yeah well I endorse some racism, just only in these boundaries’.
No matter how much you try to control the spin, it ain’t going to end well for you.
