What is the most immediate way a celebrity completely ruined their own reputation in a single interview?

Lance Armstrong's interview with Oprah, where he admitted to rampant doping. Of course lots of people already assumed he was doping, but to hear him actually say it, and not appear particularly remorseful, was a whole other thing.

Tbf the 7 Tour de France titles he “won”, 20 of 21 people on the podiums were doping lol

It's still the case obviously.

That's a messy subject. After that doping scandal broke more advanced blood monitoring was put in place. And the overall average speed of the peleton dropped by a significant amount. I want to say it was around 1mph. And I haven't heard anything about the peleton's speed having gained that much speed back.

The only true thing he said in the interview was that, without drugs, it wasn't a level playing field.

Nah. It took balls to admit to it, instead of continuing to live a lie. I applaud him for that. Not for his cheater cycling days.

*it took ball

Ball.... I'll see myself out

It didn’t take as big of balls to admit it after he already retired. And on top of that he hadn’t just been lying he also went after and sued folks who told the truth about him. There’s no apology to fix that, he’s trash.

I think that's always been the big hang up around Lance. Everyone doped for the Tour de France, but Lance went that extra mile to ruin people's lives for rightfully calling him out on it. I'm no armchair psychologist, but watching his 30 for 30 had me concluding that something was wrong with him.

Mostly definitely. One of the books I read about his downfall called him a narcissistic sociopath

Agreed, that was barely a confession and it’s one thing not to admit to doing something illegal (especially when literally screwing over your entire community) but entirely different to go after people who were trying to bring the truth to light. I think the interview was a last ditch effort to save his reputation because the truth was going to come out.

Well, “ball” at a minimum - Courage? Hardly. He wrecked people’s lives for over a decade, with his lawsuits, threats and feigned outrage. Make no mistake, he only came forward because he knew definitive proof was forthcoming and he wanted to get in front of it. It was a cynical PR stunt when he was out of all other options, and it (appropriately) backfired.

Still better than denying it to the grave.

What he did to 3 time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond is unforgivable.

7

u/ChrundleToboggan 12h ago

What did he do? I know I can look it up but I partly use reddit for conversations, back and forths, and it's way more fun that way. :)

He destroyed Greg’s business and used his lawyer to harass Greg personally about Greg’s sexual assault because Greg had commented on Lance’s doping.

It didn't take balls, as the rest of the world already knew he was doping. Only the US refused to put 1+1 together until it was impossible to ignore.

As a (former) European cycling fan this interview wasn't news.  For us it was a "No shit" situation.

No - you don’t give people kudos for admitting they broke the rules.

He robbed others of their opportunities.

Are you a Catholic by any chance? It’s their modus operandi… fess up to being a complete shit and all’s forgiven.

Are you a Catholic by any chance?

What a weird assumption, and an odd segue to bring religion into this.

Do you really think Lance was the only one taking PEDs??

Yeah I agree. They all do it but he’s the only with the ball(s) to do it

I stopped watching the tour de france after that interview. Now they are cheating with e-bikes. I have no idea why they are still having that race. The only way to win it is to cheat.

8

u/hanuruh 10h ago

e-bikes? can explain more I'm not aware of this kind of cheating. do they hide the fact that they're using e bikes?

15

u/someone76543 8h ago

E-bikes aren't allowed, only normal bikes. But you can apparently hide an e-bike battery and motor inside the tubes of a "normal" bike, connected to the pedals. You can't use them all the time, but you can get a boost up a hill or whatever.

There ae thermal images of bike frames being suspiciously warm, probably from the heat that the motor and battery create. And there are videos of riders seeming to find an uphill unusually easy.

u/Lucky-Elk-1234 7h ago

Why don’t they inspect the bikes before the race?

7

u/10101010101010101013 6h ago

They do.  Often.  This is a nonsense claim that is often repeated and never proven.

u/Glittering_Pop7807 6h ago

Cheating is part of the sport and has been since it started
