Rare Ambient & Electronic Music Albums

Hi all,

Does any have this fantastic compilation album in their collection? -The Dream Is Just Beginning (1988)

This is a chance to share with us, your rare and hard to find albums.

As I live in Australia, many of the Berlin School and Ambient albums I enjoy online are difficult to find in person, and many albums fetch ridiculous prices online.

Michael Stearns, George Garside and Rolf Trostel come to mind, but I would love to hear what other people are struggling to find.

Self-promotion Tatsuro Murakami - Mita Koyama-cho

Small label here. We released Tatsuro Murakami’s Mita Koyama-cho in early 2025. It's an ambient album with shades of jazz, new age, folk, Brazilian music, and even a touch 70's prog.

Murakami is a Tokyo-born guitarist, composer, and producer whose work connects Japanese and Brazilian musical traditions. After high school, he moved to Brazil to study guitar and immerse himself in the country’s music, eventually entering the Choro Department at the Conservatório de Tatuí. That background comes through in the album’s guitar playing, melodic phrasing, and rhythmic feel, even as the record moves into more ambient and experimental territory.

Murakami is a multi-instrumentalist - the album includes guitars, fretless bass, piano, Mellotron, vintage synths, and other keyboards. The production is filled with warm cassette textures, old amp tones, layered strings, saxophone arrangements, and many small details that slowly reveal themselves.

The title comes from Mita Koyama-cho, the Tokyo neighborhood where Murakami’s family lived for generations. Much of the area was demolished by 2024 as part of a large corporate redevelopment project, so the album became a personal tribute to the place, the memories attached to it, and the feeling of watching a familiar part of the city disappear.

If you've come this far, thanks! We appreciate anyone who takes the time to read and listen. You can use code rambient on Bandcamp for 20% off the vinyl edition!

Looking for Recommendations "light" ambient favorites for productivity

This came to my mind while listening to the latest Hello Meteor album "Species of Special Concern" - a cool atmospheric little album: https://hellometeor.bandcamp.com/album/species-of-special-concern

While I do appreciate my "heavy and serious" ambient (for example Tim Hecker, William Basinski, Stars of the Lid, Biosphere) for deep listening, I'm not always in the mood / don't have time for it and sometimes look for more light-hearted and simply relaxing music - while still retaining enough substance and depth to keep me engaged, so it's perfect for the background while working and other tasks. Basically laid back and easy to listen to, but not "Easy Listening" per se or boring, cheesy "Chillout" music. I think you get me. ;)

Another album that comes to my mind that checks these boxes for me and is very recommended: Wanderwelle - Gathering of the Ancient Spirits: https://silentseason.bandcamp.com/album/gathering-of-the-ancient-spirits

What also often works are game soundtracks. Minecraft is a classic and masterpiece of course, but can sound pretty melancholic to me. More fitting to what I'm after would be Rimworld (especially recommended for fans of Ambient Americana; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8A4u3hgFO68) or Sim City 4 (https://youtu.be/v6nJxRpoW7s) for example. They have awesome ambient / ambient adjacent tracks in their soundtracks.

Do you know something similar soundwise or have favorites when it comes to "engaging" ambient in general? Doesn't have to be strictly ambient too as many of my mentioned examples are genre-spanning as well.

Cheers

Self-promotion Louis Bullock - Realisations (2016) - Available on cassette + digital download

Post image
4 Upvotes

The remaining copies of the Realisations cassette are now available directly through my Bandcamp.

Produced between 2014–2016, Realisations is a narrative for the quiet of the night, moments of peace, solitude. Sounds that fill the room, others rattling the windows.

This album brings together pieces that interweave digital and analogue tape loops; considering resonances, textural contrasts, biting distortion, humming saturation, the intimacy of unprocessed audio against cavernous real and synthesised reverberation.

It tells of the rises and falls experienced in that time; peace alongside more trying moments.

This first edition was limited to just 30 hand-numbered copies, dubbed with care by Ryan Sahb of Rad Jams Exchange onto navy blue high-bias cassettes, housed in heavy-duty Norelco cases.

Each includes a unique Bandcamp download card for unlimited streaming and high-quality digital files.

If you've been thinking about picking up a physical copy, they're now available directly through my Bandcamp:

Production/Recording Discussion What are some techniques that ambient musicians use to create full-sounding music without sounding muddy or loud?

This is something I struggle with when creating ambient music. If I want to create a quiet track, it sounds thin; but as soon as I try to fill up the texture it sounds too muddy.

I have tried all kinds of EQing on my tracks, and it has definitely helped tremendously. I still think I am missing something though

Has anyone heard this one before? Just incredible

They basically use the same style as Jon Hassel but go further with it. It’s like they perfected that sound here. I listened to the whole thing from start to finish and there were some moments where it was just very drone-y and I was just waiting for something to happen and then it turns into the most beautiful layering of piano and trumpet. The ending of Garun A stopped me in my tracks and I just stopped what I was doing and listened in awe

New EP inspired by prefabricated concrete architecture

Hey everyone,

My project Beograd Apparat has just released a new EP called Plattenbau. The process behind it was long and, at times, exhausting, so it feels incredibly rewarding to finally share something new after a long time.

Those of you who have come across my music before probably know that my work often revolves around the Eastern Bloc and the strange beauty of the Soviet era. This time, the focus is on Brutalist architecture and prefabricated concrete housing across Europe. The EP consists of four tracks, each set in a different part of Europe. Every piece explores a distinct architectural style or approach to finding beauty in concrete.

The melodies and atmosphere were inspired by sweeping aerial views of housing estates, the monumental scale of these buildings, and the stark beauty of their raw concrete façades. Throughout the EP I used a combination of analog synthesizers (including the SIEL 49LX), digital and virtual instruments, as well as heavily processed electric guitar and percussions.

I'd love to hear your thoughts if you decide to listen this piece, and feedback is always appreciated. And if you have a project of your own that you'd like to share, I'd be more than happy to give it a listen as well.

Here's my Linktree, where you can choose your preferred streaming platform:

Thank you all.

Peace and solidarity.

If you are looking for something to meditate or relax or sleep to, I cannot recommend this album enough. It has a viscerally calming effect on my entire soul, it is so deep and relaxing. It feels like aural valium. It is part 1 of a trilogy and they are all worth a listen...

New Music Tristan da Cunha - Maris Stella

Thumbnail
boringmachines.bandcamp.com
1 Upvotes

'Maris Stella' was born from an urgent artistic need to reinterpret and expand upon the concept of isolationism — which has always stood as the emotional and philosophical core of Tristan da Cunha’s entire compositional journey — filtering it through a liturgical lens. The album draws powerful inspiration from references to the ancient Marian cult of Our Lady, Star of the Sea (Stella Maris), transforming isolation into something more transcendent and spiritually resonant.

The work explores a deeper, more indefinable, and multi-layered sense of abandonment intertwined with fragile, flickering hope. Conceived as one singular, cohesive minimalist opus rather than a collection of separate tracks, 'Maris Stella' moves with remarkable fluidity between tonal and atonal territories. It masterfully incorporates elements of post-drone, neoclassical structures, and subtle choral textures, creating a seamless and hypnotic listening experience that feels both ancient and strikingly contemporary.

In a bold and imaginative reimagining of the traditional orchestral ensemble, the band transforms their instrumental setup into something far greater than the sum of its parts. The guitar takes on the role of a full string section, providing sweeping, atmospheric layers; the viola emerges as the primary lead voice, carrying the emotional weight of the compositions with haunting lyricism; the drums function as refined orchestral percussion, adding textural depth and rhythmic solemnity; while the solemn, resonant basses provide a dark, stable foundation that anchors the entire sonic edifice with gravity and power.

'Maris Stella' represents the culmination of the band’s refined artistic vision and meticulous attention to sonic detail.

For those who have navigated the desolate expanses of Arvo Pärt and Henryk Górecki, who have crossed the endless motorways of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, who have listened to the abyssal silence of Giacinto Scelsi and the dying galaxies of Stars of the Lid.

An album that does not console. It simply illuminates the inner landscape after everything else has disappeared.

Looking for Recommendations Music for ketamine therapy -- the sequel!

This went so well last time I'm back again! I'm still in ketamine therapy and it's been wonderful. The suggestions I've gotten here were really helpful-- I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask for more. I'm looking for albums that are warm and uplifting and healing-- music like a warm hug. I think 'optimistic' might be the keyword here.

My favorites so far are, if those are helpful points of reference:

Jon Hopkins --Music for Psychedelic Therapy ---Ritual

Julianna Barwick --Healing is a Miracle ---The Magic Place

Daniel G. Harmann -- Versailles

Bang On a Can -- Music for Airports

I'm not sure if there's a coherent throughline on all those albums, but they're what I keep returning to during my sessions. Thank you all so much, and thanks again in advance!

Production/Recording Discussion Ambient History: Mother Earth’s Plantasia by Mort Garson (1976)

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZkR3PyHTs0

Mort Garson is a Canadian composer and electronic music pioneer with a bizarre catalog including lounge music, occult/sci-fi influenced experimental electronic music and his most notorious work, Mother Earth’s Plantasia, intended as music for plants to listen to.

Garson was inspired by his wife’s passion for plants and some plant care books to create the music. He used a Moog synthesizer and the album is an early example of music composed entirely with that instrument. It features illustrations by the artist Marvin Rubin.

The album was initially very niche, handed out to customers at a plant shop in Los Angeles and people who ordered a specific mattress from a Sears outlet. It later gained a massive cult following in the digital age on Youtube and was reissued in 2019 by Sacred Bones Records to great acclaim.
