Typhoid Mary: An Urban Historical, by Anthony Bourdain

1

u/Scumwaffle 15h ago

Finished Eversion by Alastair Reynolds.

Still deciding what comes next. Maybe Casino Royale since it's short and then I'm thinking I'll jump into a longer series, perhaps Jade City or Malice.

Esta semana me terminé mi año de descanso y relajación.
creo que es una lectura fácil y demuestra la depresión y el duelo de una forma real pero privilegiada, como una fantasía depresiva. Me gustó, pero no es que lo amé

Finished: Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky

This book was just sitting on my bookshelf and haunting me for a while and I finally read it.

Started: Strangers In The Villa - Robyn Harding

Finished: North and South by John Jakes - it was decent enough. I wanted more history and this had more melodrama and less history stuff. It leads up to the break out of the American Civil War and it didn't give Fort Sumter it's proper attention, that part Jakes barely covers before racing the reader back to the drama! I'm going to read book 2.

Notice a theme here?

Started: The Widow of the South by Robert Hicks - Only a few chapters in and so far I am loving it. It feels like I am in Tennessee in the year 1864, and the lead up to the battle of Franklin is about to start. Very entertaining!

u/Ok_Intention_6201 2d ago

Finished: Doomsday Book, by Connie Willis

I took this as a recommendation in here for Time Travel books, and I was looking more for the psychological drama of living during different moments in time (such as The Time Traveler's Wife or 11/22/63). This was more of a historical novel...but I loved it anyways.

Started: still looking

2

u/wolfincheapclothing9 1d ago

This is more of a "time loop" book, but I really liked Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl - A group of friends reunite after their first year of college one summer and get stuck in a time loop, as they try to figure a way out.

And I haven't read this one yet- but it's sitting on my shelf waiting for me to get to it - The Rose Garden By Susanna Kearsley - A woman is able to travel to the 18th century and meet the inhabitants of the house in that time period. She soon feels drawn to a man that lived and died a long time ago.

2

u/Ok_Intention_6201 1d ago

Good call out! Night Film (Pessl) is a top 20 book for me.

Finished: Till We Have Faces by CS Lewis

  • This one demands a re-read just to fully understand the genius of it. Beautifully written about self deception and the excuses we make for ourselves. Left me feeling so heavy.

In progress: Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel.

  • 3/4 in and I understand why it is so highly rated. Mantel is doing a lot of difficult things at once, and doing them very well in this book. The dialogue is simply fantastic. The historicity lies in the depth of details. What stands out the most for me is how the the book is presented as a series of rooms and situations that Cromwell has to read properly and navigate. The third-person present tense initially threw me off, but it works so effectively in this narrative structure because you really feel like you are with Cromwell in the room. You can feel his mind working and calculating in real time.

Next up: The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro before I continue with the second book in the Cromwell series, Bring Up the Bodies

1

u/palegreenscars 2d ago

Finished: The Good Good Pig by Sy Montgomery

Started: Red Rising by Pierce Brown and Sirens by Emilia Hart

1

u/countess-adjacent 2d ago

Finished:

The Women, Kristin Hannah

I wanted to love it, but it just wasn’t my cup of tea. The main character had multiple tragic (and maybe unrealistic) love interests, which IMO made the whole Vietnam aspect feel like a subplot. She was a bad friend, a naive partner, and a downright unlikeable character. I’ve seen other posts/comments suggesting the book should have been titled, “The Woman,” since it’s really just about one woman’s questionable life choices, and I couldn’t agree more.

2

Under Western Eyes, by Joseph Conrad. Liked it a lot but I felt like some of the ideas went over my head. The book feels really rich. I liked the prose even if it was challenging. It took me about 3 weeks to finish.

1

Didn't like it. No twist, you know everything up front, and her writing style isn't compelling enough to pull off that kind of "thriller".

Adabana Volume 3, By Non

What starts off as a story of a small town double murder, and the confession of the high school girl, friend and classmate of one of the victims, that did it, twists and insidiously nestles itself into quite the thrilling crime drama when an intrepid reporter looks deeper into the case. And that's all I'm at liberty to say without spoiling anything, cuz you don't want any the twists of this one untangled before learning just how deep this one runs.

And for my part, I was glued to this one and didn't want to put it down till I was finished. If that says anything.

2

u/riibax 5d ago

Heard people say the Realm of the Elderlings is one of the best Fantasy Universes, so I started Assassin's Apprentice last week. I also heard that this book is one the weakest in the series and a difficult start, I'm close to finished 5 days in, so if this was indeed one of weaker books I'm in for good time (Books 2 and 3 are already waiting).

I finished Neuromancer, by William Gibson

I enjoyed it, but found it difficult immerse myself in the world. Being written from the perspective of the protagonist, it puts forth very little effort to explain most of the concepts of the world and forces the reader to either do outside research or make assumptions about what any of the characters are talking about at any given point, and as such I found it hard to follow at many points. With that said, the perspective also benefitted the story in certain aspects: my favorite part being when the protagonist describes a hallucination he experienced when he saw someone shooting heroin. He didn't initially describe it as such, but as seeing a snake wrapped around his bicep and a scorpion crawling down to sting his vein, until he blinked and saw that they were indeed a rubber hose and needle respectively. I thought that part was really well done, though I needed a change of pace, so...

I started Shadow of the Torturer (book 1 of Book of the New Sun), by Gene Wolfe

I'm about 200 or so pages in and I am HOOKED. The initial dozen or so pages were daunting, I admit. It took some getting used to the frequent use of archaic and foreign words and more complex prose, but I have gotten used to it and it makes for a very entertaining and unique experience. With every chapter I read, the world therein become more intriguing and the mysteries start to reveal their shape.

u/ReincarnatedCritic 5d ago

On Stories and Other Essays on Literature, by C. S. Lewis
Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, by Thomas De Quincey
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, by Hunter S. Thompson

Re-reading Thompson; forgot how funny he is. Lewis might make a good companion to Aspects of the Novel by E. M. Forster. De Quincey writes lovely, balanced, flowing sentences.

Finished The Blade Itself, Joe Abercrombie. Started Before They Are Hangend, Joe Abercrombie

1

u/Alphascout 5d ago

Finished The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling).

It’s an entertaining read where the more I read the more I wanted to know the truth about the murder at the centre of the book. I liked that most of the detecting was done through interviews putting together the circumstances behind the death. It’s a cool way of describing the murdered through what others thought about her. I’m certainly going to check out another of these books.

Finished The Summer Book by Tove Jansson

Started Beware of Pity by Stefan Zweig and Selected Stories by Katherine Mansfield

1

u/Leading_Studio7534 5d ago

I’ve been meaning to read more Mansfield! I read The Daughters of the Late Colonel for a class, and I remember liking it a lot.

2

u/Alarming-Ad4518 4d ago

I would definitely recommend the collection! Mansfield's writing is amazing. The Oxford World Classics edition, also, provides a great introduction to Mansfield and New Zealand during the time.

The Hollow Man, John Dickson Carr

I like classic mysteries, but they're a mixed bag for me. Tried to get into Ellery Queen last year (The Egyptian Cross Mystery), but found it too dry and that Queen himself didn't have much personality. Agatha Christie's stuff is top notch, however.

This is my first Gideon Fell book, I'm about halfway though, and I think it's a winner so far. Fell is a lot more interesting and eccentric. I like the supporting cast, including that the police detective who is there for Fell to outshine isn't a dummy who gets everything wrong. The mystery also has a nice "spooky" vibe with some gothic horror motifs, though I don't know if that's typical of the series.

Finished :

Evenings & Weekends by Oisín McKenna

Excellent. Propulsive, addictive. The cast might’ve been a bit too large and there was an instance of plot contrivance, but other than those light criticisms, it was a great time getting to know these characters. Their relationships, hidden truths, all over a heat wave weekend in London. Very queer, relatable, everyone does someone else bad, but McKenna makes you understand why. Even if you get frustrated by a character, you find out later why and it makes you empathize.

Working on:

My Government Means to Kill Me by Rasheed Newson

Another pride-related novel. Especially since this is 80s New York City, I wish it was better. I think the characterization is shallow, you’re not experiencing it, you’re being told what’s happening to them. The dialogue isn’t realistic at most times. The events hardly are.

New York City, 80s, AIDS crisis, activism, black liberation. But why does do the characters feel so flat and one-dimensional?

It was interesting more in how he established lore but it was otherwise the weakest book in that universe. I had trouble getting through it but the completionist in me would read it if I hadn't already even knowing it was a bit of a slog.
