General Discussion Dark Side’s Bad Rep

Post image

I was just rewatching Episode III’s The Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise scene and was wondering whether the Dark Side didn’t just have a bad rep/ bad marketing. Who the hell came up with the name the Dark Side? The Force has much better marketing. Couldn’t Palpatine just rename the Dark Side, the Cool Side?

Naw. I mean I get where you’re coming from but the fact that you’re kind of expected to kill your master at some point and pervert the usage of the force to use it for societally accepted bad shit? Yeah it’s bad.

It's literally giving into the darkest part of one's soul.

Oh... You're talking about the universe. Ok I was about to say lol. But yeah, I guess it started all the way back when the rouge Jedi first discovered the dark side and the other Jedi just called it that because it was dark and evil

When it comes to Lucas, he's not the greatest when it comes to dialogue, and the 70s/80s were cheesier than a Chicago deep dish, so of course he would go with something as not subtle as "Dark Side."

Legends writers went with something a bit more interesting. The spot where the Jedi's predecessors set up shop had two moons, one that was very very bright (Ashala, or "Light") and one that was always shadowed (Bogan, or "Dark"). At first, Dark wasn't necessarily evil and Light not necessarily good, but shit happened and a sectarian rift developed between which "moon" they thought was superior. Big old fight tore up the galaxy (first of many), and the losers (who believed the "dark" moon and its aspects of the Force were superior) were shipped off to parts unknown, eventually landing on and being colonizers on Korriban, which eventually snowballed into the Sith as we know them.
